Having problems with running this, finding a game, etc.

Hey everybody. I installed this a couple months ago, but couldn't get any servers to show up for the longest time. When I finally did get the servers to show up, don't know how, just checked on it after not checking on it for like a month, the servers were showing up (though only one with any players in it, 11/20 Talo's Group).

However, it wouldn't let me join the server, with the error message that the server was running a different version of the game. I remember downloading the most recent, but downloaded the newest patch off of the front page anyway, and after installing it, I had the same problem.

I can create my own server, and play, but of course then I'm playing alone. I did get to check out a couple of the maps, and they all looked very fun.

I play a lot of TF2, but I do miss grenades, hunted, and the old sentry guns that weren't impossible to kill, so I figured this was a godsend, however the installation problems here, and lack of players are a slight turn off.

When I was running through the maps wondering why I couldn't join a server, I noticed that theres a big lower case a over my crosshairs, is there anyway to eliminate this?

Also, have you guys thought of making it so that you don't have to register to post on the forums? Theres just a lot of red tape between new players actually getting in on this, and I think that may be part of the reason for the low player base.

I don't really know what to say. If it says you have the wrong version...

You get a message about class tables I presume?

Dexter recently uploaded a zip of 2.41. Its just a zip with the fortress forever folder which you place in the sourcemods directory (no install)

http://www.dexterhaslem.com/Fortress..._241_folder.7z

I'm really not sure what else to suggest.

No idea what you mean.

Sorry you find it annoying to register, I wouldn't have described it as red tape - you only have to approve your email if I remember correctly. But it means we get a lot less spam than we probably otherwise would have had registering been optional.

It also maintains consistency with knowing who's posting rather than having the same person post under different names allowing us to keep control of trolls and make users betas/developers so they can see other sections of the forum.

I deleted all of the FF files on my computer, and then downloaded that file and put it in my Steam App directory. Now I have no idea how to even start the game. It's not in my Steam Library anymore, and theres no file in that whole download that initiates a startup at all. Please help me.

By red tape, I mean the installation problems, combined with having to register to get on this forum, combined with having to post a topic and wait for a reply of how to get this game working.

Make sure you've restarted steam.

another suggestion, if there aren't any players on public servers you might have luck with pickups.
this should get you started

But be warned, the pickup community can be very competitive, which can make the game frustrating if you are somewhat new to the game.
