They've already talked to 25 or so HW manufacturers, probably mostly PC manufacturers I would guess. A console is just an overpriced PC in a special looking box.

SteamOS's Public BETA went live around 13 hours ago.

Unfortunately: "WARNING: Both installation methods will erase all content on the target computer."

So, I guess I can't just go install this right now.

Better than average specs required currently... (and it's not like it can be your main PC, 'cause it's turned into a SteamBox)

In the SteamOS Beta standard configuration, the Steam Client program serves as a user interface and provides connectivity to our Steam online services. That being said, you can still access standard Linux desktop.

And strange that it isn't fully enclosed, but tbh, it is BETA, and I wouldn't expect it to be.

Based on the minimum specs for SteamOS currently, that seems quite low.

I'm buying a Steam Box when they come out, because I could do with a gaming device that runs my Steam Library that is moderately portable and easy to setup.

I can't carry my PC everywhere, but I can take a Steam Box, plug it in to a TV, and play the games I play on PC with my Cloud saves there, and just do what I would do on a PC, except at a friend's house.

When they realise they can get one, and it's better than their Xbox or PS (for which 10 games is as expensive as the console itself - and it's fully backwards compatible if they replace it with a newer one later on in life - not to mention compatible with a PC), they'll get one.

Then I can play multiplayer games with my PC friends vs. my console friends on a TV in another house, even another country or my monitor. Hell, I can go anywhere with an internet connection in the WORLD, because Steam Boxes don't have any country limits like other consoles do.
