Which CS do you prefer?
I've played very, very little CS in my lifetime, but I plan on changing that by picking up 1.6 sometime in the (relatively) near future.
Any CS players here? Which iteration do you prefer? |

used to scrim CS 1.6 for fun when DoD would get slow back in the day, even played a few leagues just because of the ease of finding a scrim. had similar experiences with CSS and dare I say ESEA pickups.
i honestly cant think of any reason to pick one over the other anymore, if you have no reason to be a purist (ie, new player) CSS is fine and on a modern engine with raw mouse input woo just because that was really close to a serious post which I never do, this is the CS I prefer

1.6 for everything cept for AWP
CS:S for AWP Now that CS:GO is nearly out, I will be hosting at least a few servers. Probably 3 to start out, one for cross plat, one for PC only for pub play and another for PC only for pickups. |

Just a warning, and I could be wrong, but you may find you get horribly owned picking up the game at such a late stage. Majority of players have been playing it for a very long time now. New players tend to play CoD instead so you might find something like MW2/3 more forgiving. (although obviously a lot more expensive!)

I think i prefer cs 1.6, and that's just because I found it a little harder to score head shots. If you would shoot on 1.6 while moving, it made you very inaccurate. On CS:S I find it extremely easy to get head shots while moving and such. So imo I would actually start out on CS:S.

Also, By cross platform does that mean console users will face off against pc users? If so, I think that is a horrible idea. Someone using a controller vs someone using a keyboard and mouse is going to get RAPED so unbelievably bad.
Not to mention all the h4x0rz they have on pc servers. =\

Either way, console players are going to get slaughtered unless Valve fingers out a way to better balance the game for them. |

It's probably comparable to being a new player in FF playing pickups, except in CS1.6 pub players are like pickup players. |

Interesting!
Reinstalling CSS when I get home, and I will prepare to be wrecked.
Was Counter-Strike released post-TFC? I know that lots of adds for CSGO say that it was released in 2000, and unless I'm mistaken, TFC was released in '99. Last edited by CaptainAhab; 02-29-2012 at 10:55 PM. |

i think it was bought by valve and went retail after TFC.. trying to remember, the HL cd I had contained HL, TFC and maybe firearms? and CS went 1.0 shortly after. that was like before fucking dinosaurs existed though

Yeah i remember when TFC community far outstripped CS, CS quickly grew though and it took players away from TFC for sure. I think it was around beta 6 or beta 7 when it started getting talked about in TFC IRC channels. According to google beta 7 was mid 2000, then 1.0 went live at the end of 2000. (Compared to TFC which was released in 1999).
I'd guess maybe the CS community became bigger than TFC in 2001-2002? UKTFCL season 3 was around summer 2001, season 5 was 2002: http://uktfcl.far2cool.com/leaguetable.aspx I count 106 clans, each with a minimum of 8 players. Enemy down (popular CS league) was founded around 2002-2003. I think clanbase predates that, but I can't find a similar list of CS clans to compare. (CS only required 5 players compared to TFC's 8, which was a draw for people) |

Woohoo, went 20-18 (or... something...) in my first match in a long time. :O Figured I'd go 1-50 haha. Forgotten how much fun the game can be outside of the 20v20 pub servers.

You should try out gun game Ahab. It's like team deathmatch with instant spawn, so it would be a good way to get a feel of how all the guns shoot without having to wait 3 minutes every death. I play gun game all the time. I like it better than regular CSS to be honest, because I can't stand waiting to spawn =\

Dude I can't wait for cross platform. It's gonna be hilarious. Finally we can show console users that a control is like the downs of input methods. I hope they don't try any silly stuff trying to balance it out.
