Hello all,

Long time fan of TFC, first time poster on the forums here. I originally started playing TFC back in like 99'. Grew up with the game basically before it started getting old and bots started populating servers more than people. I was waiting along with a lot of other people for the release of FF but due to life in general I had dropped gaming all together until just recently. Long story short, I just now downloaded FF and finally got to play it for the first time. I thought you may like a fresh perspective.

To start, I see there's only 14 servers. Most of which are empty except for one that's password protected and had 12 people playing. I joined an empty pub and waited for someone else to join and we had a 1v1 on ff_push.

Here's my 2 cents..

The Good

- Changing the aim of the SG gun is super easy. Much, much better than TFC.

- Detpack included in weapons is definitely an improvement.

- Most maps that I saw are well done. Basically what I expected.

- The weapons are well done too for the most part, especially the charging feature on the engineer gun. (Rail gun was it? I don't remember)

The Bad

- The background for the main screen of the game. It leaves a little something to be desired.

- Soldier is way overpowered, specifically the rocket launcher. I noticed this right off the bat as that was my favorite class.

- In addition to above, the rockets seem to hit people too easily. I must have got three or four midair kills in the short time I played. Rarely did I get those in TFC unless I was on a roll and kicking some ass.

- Nail grenade for soldier? Where is it? I don't know what that laser thing is and I don't like it. I'm not trying to bash it but I can tell it wouldn't even grow on me over time, I just plain don't like it.

- Standard grenade beep is gone, the bar at the bottom is okay but the sound would be nice too.

- HW Guy secondary grenade is.. well what I said about the soldiers secondary above.

- The on fire sound. When I was playing vs a pyro the sound of me being on fire seemed to keep going from time to time, even after death and respawn.

- Scout. A jump pad? Really? Remember how much we all loved the teleporter when that was introduced? It grew on some people, although I'm not one of them. It reminds me of an old TFC update kinda thing where they just randomly throw something in no one asked for or wanted. Maybe there's a thread somewhere where people voted on it or asked for it so my apologies in advance if that's the case.

- Scout. Where are there caltrops?

- Lastly, the team select GUI. I had trouble getting out of it when I pressed it on accident. Either it's my resolution or something.. or there's no close/cancel button. It should have one. Beyond that it's a little too cluttered, I guess? Can't even think of a word. Just cluttered or clunky. I'd make the window a littler smaller and easier to read personally.


All in all, it's not bad. I'm sure there's plenty of bitching threads all around this forum and I don't want to come off as bitching. Bottom line; It's got potential to be great but needs some work IMHO.

Good work, I can tell a ton went into it. Hopefully some of the issues are addressed and it gains a following, I miss the good ole' days.

This is a bug that will be fixed in the next patch. The audio timer is there, but it is broken on fresh installs at the moment. To fix, go into the Fortress Options on the main menu, go to the Sounds tab, and hit Apply. If I remember right, that should fix it. If it doesn't, hit the Play button next to the grenade timer.

Yep it's there now and working. I happened to be browsing through the menus last night before I checked this thread again and it started to work. I probably browsed past sound in the options and ended up hitting apply.

Nope. I don't even remember if my handle was Myth back then. I was in BDU with Logan Davis if any of you know him. In another clan with sW.Vile, CentComOne, 211^ and Budlight. Mulchman and his girlfriend/wife thought I wallhacked because my brother and I had our PC's set up right next to each other. Good times.

I figured as much on the pickup server. Wow IRC, people still use that? Haha.. Most of us used to use gamesnet years ago.

It may not prepare you for the speed and the tactics/map layouts, but it does a decent job teaching you some of the basic mechanics.

Hahaha, wow that was surprisingly encouraging until the air control part (and even then, he slowly started to understand, but it seems like his sensitivity was too high to air control properly ). It also clearly shows the misconceptions about the game that will, unfortunately, always be incredibly tough to overcome ("a mod of TF2" ).

It was a "gameplay" video by some 10-12 year old kid, playing Fortress Forever. He said that he tried to join servers but got errors and then said "You aren't missing anything by not playing this game". Then he called the game a "realistic TF2 remake with cool hats and cool weapons".

Then he played the training mode, and did fairly well until the air control section. He seemed to have ADHD and refused to listen to the ingame instructions. I didn't finish watching the video, but i believe that he ragequit the game and said it sucked.

I don't think that character customization is bad unless it just goes over the top, which is has in TF2 in a lot of ways.

But there are hats in the game that don't really go out of the way of the original style of the class, and every class has some hats that do so.

And there are some miscs, such as the ones that show how long you've played, tournament medals, map maker medals, that I like as well.

And then weapons, if they're done correctly (TF2 has not), then they add to the game, not take away from it or make it worse.

Now, if the weapons were done like hats and were simply cosmetic styles, then that would be interesting as well.

But then you have to consider, if everything like weapons and hats would only be cosmetic changes, then what point would there be? Unless the game eventually reaches a point where the DEVs just stop and say, "Well, this game is balanced perfectly fine, there are no glitches, there are no suggestions..." then modeling stuff like this would be a waste of perfectly good time. And even if modeling was left to the community, and the DEVs only had to implement (aka Valve's current strategy for hats) then you would still be left with "Why are these players modeling pointless stuff when they could be working on maps and the such?" stuff.

tl;dr, I wouldn't have a problem with cosmetics, so long as they don't get in the way of the development of the game and they don't have to be unlocked.

It wasn't that bad, the video of the kid going through the training.

More eye opening, if you ask me.

What I meant by my comment is that the training doesn't prepare you for battle, objectives, or any of the key parts of FF. Just the movement. And the movement, in my opinion, is the number one turn off to most people. So "here's your training on all this silly movement" would probably be stupid to most people. Granted, most people are stupid.

I dunno, I think the training does well to teach them the movement of FF, but it doesn't exactly teach them about a lot of the key things, like killing other players and capturing flags...objective icons...command points...sentry guns...blah blah blah. Still, strictly as a movement tutorial it's quite good.

Being healed by a medic should make armor regenerate over five seconds up to a maximum of 50%. Having armor repaired by an engineer should likewise do the same with health. This would make these mechanics more worthwhile.

Maybe just remove infection. It's quite possible it's simply a terrible idea that never should have been in QWTF or TFC, and no amount of changing the mechanics of it will make it work.

In response to OP's comments about the laser grenade being underpowered in certain situations, I would say that the soldier is already the most powerful class in the game. He does not really need a secondary grenade at all.

What's really overdue is to have an in-game description of the role of each class when hovered over on the selection screen, and possibly for the game to recommend soldier, hwguy and engineer to new players.
