Exotic Pets
I was wondering if anyone on these forums has an exotic pet. Sure, you might have a dog or a cat or a bird, but any exotic pets? Snakes, Spiders, Scorpions, Frogs, etc? Despite my severe arachnophobia, I plan on getting a tarantula soon. Genus Avicularia, species *Avicularia or Purpurea.

Why would you get a tarantula if you're an arachnophobe? Is this some sort of test you've created for yourself to master your fears?

Yes. I don't plan to blindly go in to it or do it immediately. I'm going to be spending a good year or so slowly conquering my fear and learning about them. Maybe go to the pet store and hold a few. I used to be terrified just to see a picture of them, but after a few days of reading about them, I no longer look at them as savage killing machines, but rather pretty interesting creatures. Still.. It would probably be a different story within their presence.
You'd be surprised at the number of arachnophobes who own spiders. It's pretty ironic. Even the most seasoned spider enthusiast occasionally gets a little jumpy, though. There are quite a few owners with Theraphosa Blondi; the Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula (Biggest spiders in world, average size is around that of a normal dinner plate.) .. I don't think I'll be going that far. A tiny little tarantula should be okay. :s |

I've always wanted to get a Bird Eater and let him run around like a cat. My roommates said they'd kill him though.
I do also want an African Grey. But don't think I would be able to give it their attention. |

I've got a snake. 'Tis a Corn I've had for a number of years and it's going on 4.5 feet long now.

Oh man, that pic freaks me the hell out.
But I've got a small assortment of pets, an iguana and a cockatiel that were rescues as well as a bearded dragon that is going on about 2 years old. I'd love to have one of the bigger birds, a mccaw or African grey but like Binary said, I don't know if I could give him the attention he deserves right now. I'd play with the fucker all the time, can't do that with my pissy old cockatiel, he's just a dick, lol. I guess being abused and abandoned would make anyone a little grumpy. |

I got over my fear of spiders by watching this movie.........
with Jon Goodman in it.
It really gives spiders a good name and I lost my fear of them after watching it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnophobia_(film) dh

I have that film around here somewhere on DVD. I bought it years ago in an attempt to ease my arachnophobia but never watched it. It would be nothing to for me to watch it now. No problemo.

My mom had an African Grey, but it flew away lolz... I was too little to really remember it, but also my cousin had some kinda noisy bird. I used to hate that thing, always squawking and shit. I could never get a decent nights sleep in that house.
Also one of my neighbors had a mountain lion for a pet, and that is just awesome. I would love to have a huge cat for a pet. Until it ate me but, I probably wouldn't care, because they are that awesome. Last edited by PartialSchism; 09-23-2009 at 09:44 PM. |
