It's funny but unfortunate, because a lot of people believe that shit.

The author misinterprets the notion of faith.

I think there's plenty of room for a person to have faith, but not be blind to fact and science. Yeah, some of it contradicts... but a truly spiritual person can live with that. And guess what? A lot of scientists are religious as well.
Strangely, it was a science class that made me believe that there might be a god. It involved the origins of the universe, and the analysis of this professor was that planets like ours are more common than we might think. As he put it: "it's almost as if the universe was made for life". That struck me as truly profound, because it really does point toward something setting the universe up for us in a very complex way. When I think of God, I don't think of someone who just *poof* makes stuff appear. I think of a being so brilliant that when it set the universe in motion, with a single act, it did so with a plan which that one act would set into motion. Now that is brilliance. Oh, and for more funny stuff: Colbert Interviews Congressman Who Wants the Ten Commandments Displayed In House & Senate. What's sad is that I'm agnostic and I can get more than than Westmoreland could... |

I am definitely with Jinx on this one. I am not faithful but I think that the idea of a God in the most general sense is quite reasonable. My Biology teacher addressed someone who asked the question of how he could believe in god and still be a biologist with a PHD and he said something about how we can dissect an animal and learn all there is to know about it but even with all that we cannot give it life. All the parts are there but something is missing which is beyond our comprehension.
That and reading books on theoretical physics by one Stephen Hawking. The major turning point in my going from Atheist to Agnostic was learning that the universe is not infinite in time or space. With all that said it is still pompous to believe human affairs are important on the mind of god or at least more important relative to other creatures. We are made of the same stuff they are and follow the same rules of life they do. Last edited by o_yomamashouse; 02-02-2007 at 03:50 PM. |

Anyway there is no solid proof either way. My dad (who I haven't spoken to in 8 years) is a science tutor so what do you think my views on the matter are? Last edited by o_paft; 02-02-2007 at 01:22 PM. |

But me personally I don't think I want a afterlife to in theory continue living forever, so I don't really care how the universe begun.

I agree, to think that humans are so special that everything revolves around us (which people thought quite literally for a while lol) or was made for our consumption is the height of arrogance. |

If a God wanted there to be life in the universe, why not make life on every planet? Why put life so far away from one another? Because it's a happy coincidence that the conditions were right in this exact spot. |

i dont believe in god, but i think religion is a good thing because it gives people something to believe in and gives them hope, people who need hope, wouldnt be the same without religion

The person who is the result if near impossible circumstances always wants to think there was a reason behind it all. Being the luck of the draw isn't much fun. Doesn't mean he's wrong to believe so, of course.

They are wrong to believe it if they don't have anything to back it up.
