Building a better pc for my daughter...
Well im trying to build a better pc for my daughter, right now she has an old P2 350 mhz so its time for an upgrade.
I have an P4 1,7,HDD,CD/DVD player, case and the other stuff, got a mobo from a friend at work. Its a Asrock P4I65G Intel S478 I865G Chipset, VGA, DDR, Ljud, AGP MATX,but my memory sticks SDram 133 will not fit on that mobo. Looks like i have to buy DDR sticks, the mobo only have two memory slots and i dont know what kind of memory i should buy. Checked some sites and i found DDR,DDR2 and DDR Dual Channel, must i have memory sticks in both slots and do they have to be of same type and size??? Help... |

They need to be the same type (since the mobo will probably only alow one type) but size doesn't matter.
I don't know much about DDR and DDR2 but I know that SDRAM and DDRAM are cut differently so it's easy to not make mistakes when installing ram. |

HG, from the ASRock web site ( http://www.asrock.com/product/P4i65G.htm ), it looks like it supports up to Dual Channel DDR400 (Supports DDR400/333/266 )
So basically you are looking at PC3200, PC2700, or PC2100 memory. As said, they do NOT have to be the same size or even speed, but if you go with 2 you'll be better served by having the same brand, even if slower, since the memory runs at the speed of the slowest stick of memory. And no, you don't have to have both slots filled.... one will work just fine. I'd suggest a 512MB (or 2 - 256MB's, whatever is cheaper). But you could get away with 256MB total if you want.... unless she's going to be a gamer like the rest of your family! |

If you want to get Dual Channel mode enabled, which you probably do, then you need 2 sticks, and they should both be identical (same brand, make, and size).
so, I would suggest 2 of 512MB DDR400 sticks, or 2 x 256MB. 2 x 1Gb is probably too excessive and expensive for this computer. |

Use TWO matching pieces of DDR-400, Non-ECC, Non-Reg. The Intel 865 chipset supports both single-sided and double-sided DIMMs with the exception of double-sided x16 organizations.

That memory option would be fine although, I'd go for two 512s if you can afford it.

if you plan to upgrade to vista at a later date, I would ABSOLUTELY recommend 1GB (Total) 2x 512, or 1x 1GB. It may be slightly more expensive, but if your running windows XP, 512 can get sluggish pretty easy when gaming (though it's MUCH better than 256! :P) but 1GB will definatly get the job done with gaming on windows XP, and will still keep you covered when vista is avaliable. (I've been using 1GB since I built this PC, and have played everything on it, of course more is better...)
Anyhow, im just suggesting 1GB if you plan on going with vista later on, or if you plan to play games like F.E.A.R, HL2, CS:S, DOD:S, FF, Far Cry, Guild Wars, The Sims #, Sim City 4+, etc. (Which most of these require a decent graphics card too, but ram has alot to do with thier [the games] performance.) Either way, im sure she'll be happy over the old one! |
