Creating textures

Simple question really, probably a really noob question .. but how does one create their own textures for HL2.

Had a quick look on valve-erc but didnt really find anything helpful, just after a quick tutorial

cheers

Well seing that I was going to post this same exact question...i think i'll just bump this thread...

What i'm mainly looking for here is the process behind converting a pic to a texture and also any useful programs that work well with the diferent mediums.

I have photoshop CS2 btw

Cool I'll check those out...

Is there anything specific i should (or shouldn't use) if i have CS2?

EDIT: ok so...the valve one sux, but the GUI program feeking rocks! Thanks

Are there any good tutorials out there that will help me figure out the diference between all of the different choices for these things?

"$basetexture"
"$surfaceprop"

I checked out the part Valve has, and it helps a little, but i really would love to get more info on that...

All you need for photoshop is the ability to save to targa format. If you want to get into normal maps there are plugins to help you make those. There are plugins that will allow you to read and write directly to .vtf, too.

I don't know of any good tutorials for the shader parameters. A lot of them are pretty obscure and you don't need to learn them. Look at some example .vmt files--FF comes with a bunch that are easy to find--and see which ones they use.

$basetexture should be the path to your vtf file
$surfaceprop should be one of the names from this list: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/w...ace_properties
