FF freeze... does my card hate FF?
I recently upgraded my system to a Quadcore 6600 w/ the nvidia 9600 gt. Works great for all games (including cs source) but not fortress forever. Game starts and my comp freezes and the video signal dies immediately. I tried every driver and beta driver possible. Gonna return the card. Ideas?

Hmm if you can run CS Source you should be able to run FF. You might of gotten a corrupt version on the FF installer so try reinstalling FF see if that helps.

I tried uninstalling all of Steam and FF...
I loose my vid card instantly (like class select, sometimes before, sometimes after). Goes black and monitor looses signal, and a fan starts going really fast (not sure which one)... Ive tried every driver known to man. Im out of options. Btw, Bioshock works excellent, so does Fear, CS source, World of warcraft, any video stress test from any game... Anyone with any info would be verymuch appreciated. |

Try creating a server through FF and see if the screen still goes.

But did you used a new installer from a different mirror or the same one?
Also to narrow it down You dl the 2.2 Full Installer then you patch it up with 2.3?

I did dl full 2.2 then patch 2.3. I used a couple different mirrors, including the one from fortress-forever.com.
Also ive recently experienced the same crash during random games of CS:S. That would make it not only FF, however, FF crashes it every time. |

What OS are you running?
I know I had major issues running many HL1/2 games when using 64-bit XP. |

Are you using Vista ? Nvidia drivers for windows Vista are notoriously shitty. So shitty in fact, that some of the latest Linux builds out there can actually perform better under wine with the win2k setting ( Games like Guild Wars are one such example of this. )...try checking your other hardware and searching around the net. You may have a hardware conflict.
Basically, it's most likely your drivers or your OS. I would also run a spyware/virus check just for the hell of it but chances are low that malware is the issue here....but you never know. |

Alternative solution if you have Vista: Take your card back and get a Radeon. Radeon drivers for Vista are much better.

So, ive tried about everything i can to fix this problem over the past few months... this strange crash sometimes even happens on CS:S but very rarely. Ive found out with my graphics settings lower, FF lasts a bit longer before it crashes, and it also lasts a lot longer when I start my own server.
I tried about every nvidia driver i can find including the most recent ones. Ive tried reinstalling all of steam and DLing FF from different mirrors. I tried that steam problem check link and everything was functional. Im also running vista home prem 32b, for those asking about my operating system. Also, this rig is brand new with all new components, so any issues of viruses, spyware, dust, etc... are nonexistant. Ive about come to the conclusion that my 9600 GT OC is awesome but worthless when it comes to FF and some CS... which is ironically all im interested in playing these days. If i buy an ATI card, id like something reliable and equal or better than the 9600 GT, but i do not know anything about ATI cards. Does anyone have any awesome recommendations that wont break my bank but give me the quality im looking for? Thanks for all the help guys - you rock |

Well you have exactly the same spec as my rig at home collecting dust which plays better than my laptop.
XP Q6600 @ 3Ghz XFX 9600 GT XXX edition 4GB ram (cant remember what - been away too long) my lappy is: Vista T9300 2.5Ghz 4GB 533MHz 8600M GT I'm saying you should be able to run fine... I don't think it's your spec... unless you only have 1GB ram.. that said when I get home the first thing I'm doing is buying a new gfx card - it does give me lower fps on higher resolutions on high settings, but I wouldn't say its unacceptable at all |

I would agree with elmo here that video card you got is way more then enough, heck i used to play FF fine on a geforce 6800agp card with 2gb ram, and a single core 2.22 cpu, so yes i am 100% sure its not your rig. Unless there was a hardware issues that you or we are not aware off.Definitely get more ram if you have 1gb or less, i recommend at LEAST 2gb.

If you can't get it working then maybe your card is defected?

All great replies, much appreciated.
My rig is:: Vista Home Prem 32 Intel quad 6600 processor 4GB DDR2 corsair nvidia 9600 GTOC, by BFG (unfortunately didnt register for the lifetime warranty, was kept in box for many months before built) cheap 400watt power supply To respond to the steam link, yeah i checked it, everything passed. I use Kaspersky Anti Virus, never gave me probs. The really curious part to me is... this system runs almost everything with flying colors! Bioshock on all settings, WoW, Jerico, im downloading Fallout 3 now. Bioshock alone pretty much rules out issues such as power supply or graphics card in my book... most hardware in general id say. But why would i be able to run all this, but have my system crash (acts like graphics card dies, loss of signal to monitor immediately, fans get loud, system locks up...) ONLY on FF, and then randomly during extensive play on CS:S? Ive heard BFG is kinda crappy, some manufacturer defective cards and whatnot... but why would everything else run beautifully? Im almost waiting for a new FF update to see if that addresses the issue. Anymore thoughts? -thx |

try some random things like
disabling steam friends in game. (used to be known for random vista problems) adding-heapsize 1572864 to launch options (why not ) No doubt you tried disabling the AV just while you play.. does seem unrelated though. I mean you say it quits as soon as you load - so i sense it's not hardware stress related So I'm pointing at some driver or software memory leaky shit... but its only FF.. hrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmzzz.. its one of those moments you wish you were infront of the PC to watch it all happen Is there anything in your windows system log?

I'm having the same issue. It hasn't always been this way, nor have I made any recent hardware changes. I believe it's a steam problem.
