WinRAR error
what the hell?
Ok, ive been backing all of my music and crap up, and compressing them with winRAR. before i reformatted, i checked to see if Windows could read the discs. it could read the discs fine, but when i opened up the .rar files, it said ! Read error in the file D:\Music.rar ! Data error (cyclic redundancy check). what the fuck? also, i used a nero free trial to put all the crap on the dvds. i compressed them so they could fit. help? |

Set the CD on a flat surface and then take a full glass of water and set it on top of the CD. If the CD keeps the glass from touching the flat surface of the countertop then you, my friend, have a coaster...at least that's what it sounds like to me...sounds like a bad burn and the data got mangled.

Copy the RAR file from the DVD/CD to your hard disk and try using 7Zip: http://www.7-zip.org/ If it dosent work from windows try a live linux CD, or try opening it from your linux partition if you already have linux installed. if it dosent copy over from the DVD, you have some serious problems |

fucking A. I just tried to copy it onto windows, and about 9 percent in, it gives me the same error.
The weird thing is, when i open it, it loads around 1,300 something files, hangs, locks up, then gives me the error. it may be just one file. of course, i cannot delete the file, because i cannot open up the damned file |

would a USB drive give me an issue, do you think?
i mean, i have all my porn (jk), music, and games, and pictures all backed up ready to go, but they are not being copied onto windows. maybe i could use a friend's computer, and then copy the crap from the DVDs onto a USB, and go from there. |

It's either a bad RAR or a bad CD (and potentially burner). Basically the information got fucked up somewhere along the line.
If you burned the CD/DVD/whatever at "Max speed" you may try decreasing the speed to an actual listed value, some burners just take issue with going at max speed all the time. I've had similar problems with backup CDs before, so maybe this will help you. Very smart of you to check the CD prior to formatting, as well. Kudos on that.

Not being able to copy it over to the HD tells me a bad burn, or for some reason you do not have your DVD drivers properly installed. With my dell they hide my DVD drivers in the chipset/bus drivers. Before I installed the proper drivers I could not read many DVD disks, and some DVD's would report odd read errors.... thn I got the right drivers, and now everything runs as smooth as silk. BTW in the future , if you want high compression, give 7zip format a try.... Especially if you have a multi-core processor, or a 64bit processor. Also try to keep your files around 600-650 megs, that way not only can they fit on CD's but if one of the files becomes corrupt, you wont loose as much data... I stopped using DVD-CD for backup a few years ago, I just got 2 USB, external drives... I make 2 backups in case one disk fails too... DVD and CD are not a very safe medium. I worked for Cintech back in the late 80's... 42% of the CD's we made where recycled! They would make them, and burn them for clients, and then test them...IF the test failed they simply re-cycled the materials and started over.(we did stuff for EIDOS, and a few otther game companies). anyways, external HD's are much faster for transfering data, and they are less likely to be ruined by heat or sunlight or Bad burnings as optical media. Just make sure you dont keep both backups in the same place in case of fire!! I keep one at home and the other I keep at my friends house. I read a story on slashdot a few months ago of some dumbass who put all his backup drives, and laptops in the oven for vacation. He thought the oven would be a safe place to keep them away from burglers... well, then his girlfriend got home early, and decided to bake a cake for his homecoming....she noticed a really foul plastic smell while preheating the oven to 450 degrees.... you can imagine the rest, I bet it was a hell of a mess to clean out of the oven. |

Winrar has it's ups as well...
I personally have both. I use winrar more often because 7zip has issues if files aren't STRICTLY named .rar. If you get a multi-piece .rar with extensions like .r12 it often has issues. However BOTH have support for multiple cores (which is AWESOME when you have quad core system ) |
