FYI: Bioshock installs SecuROM service

From here:

BioShock Demo Installs SecuROM Service

2K Games recently issued at statement addressing the DRM protection and widescreen problems for the BioShock PC game. In the statement 2K reveals a change in number of activations available with each copy of BioShock. Consumers are now allowed to activate their copy of BioShock a total of five times via the SecuROM network. Problems have already surfaced on the third-party severs preventing users from activating their copy of the game.
What 2K has failed to address is the the SecuROM service installed on your computer when installing BioShock, which is also included in the demo.
Microsoft offers a utility called RootkitRevealer located: here. The program will scan your system for rootkits. Once you scan your system, the program will reveal the SecuROM service with this message:
…\Software\SecuROM\!CAUTION! NEVER DELETE OR CHANGE ANY KEY*

It's not technically a root kit, but it is an unnecessary service that will likely cause problems on some minority of people's computers. The real pirates will strip it out, and, again, the only ones to suffer will be the honest customers.

According to something I read, the main problem is that it only allows itself to be installed 5 times max (was 2, but increased to 5 after bunch of complaints.).

Steam activation is different than the non-steam retail PC copy, so we don't get the SecuROM crap, we just get Steam.

No, you do still get SecuROM with the Steam version (though maybe not with the Demo version)

Can't you just reformat your computer to get around this?

Edit: Guess not, seeing as it has to contact a server. But hey, not like it will not eventually be hacked and spoofed. Goodbye Bioshock and any chance of me buying you anytime soon.

360 ftw

As for the install only 2 times issue, a rep for Bioshock said that if you uninstall the game then you get that install back, but if you just format w/o uninstalling the game then you only have one install left. Yes it is gay but that's how you do it.
