That's the cool part. You aren't really missing out on anything if the unlockables are just different and not blatantly better. Its like if you started out as a medic with only the medgun and had to earn the bonesaw and syringe gun. That would just blatantly allow poopsockers to run you over entirely. Is 10 seconds of constant crits better than 10 seconds of dual invincibility? It depends on the situation, your play style, and other things. I can't see one being obviously better than the other.
