Just want some clarification about the clanning / league situation.
First, let me say that FF is pretty fucking awesome, it's better than TF2 imo and tons better than TFC as the devs actually seem to care and are trying to balance things out.
Anyways, I've had a long absence from clans/league play and now that I'm back from what I'm seeing there's not a lot of leagues/clans for FF other than pubbing/scrimming (maybe?). I looked at FF-TFL and it hasn't been updated since 2008, the STA ladder seems dead at the moment as well as the UGC ladder. Even then, these are only 4vs4 O v D, wtf happened? I know TF2 probably pretty much blackballed FF when they released about the same time but still.. FF is so much better than TFC I figured there'd be way more of a clan / league presence. So, what I would like clarification on is: Are there any leagues currently running ladders right now? Are there any clans recruiting for these ladders? Are there any "old" clans from TFC currently participating in these? I guess you could also call this a LFC request, but I'd just like to try and play competitively again after I shake off the rust and TFC is just kinda..meh and TF2 although can be fun is more like a game where you pub, mostly. I also don't mean to sound demanding, forgive me if I do, ^^. Last edited by hypno; 04-24-2010 at 12:24 AM. |

You might want to try #ff.pickup on Gamesurge (US) or Quakenet (EU).
Leagues have been going in cycles. STA and TFL have never really gotten off the ground since their first season or so back in 1.0/1.1. UGC ran a few seasons, died, came back, and is now dying again. Leagues being active or not is purely based on player demand. If enough players are willing to play, a league will spring into action. Once those players stop playing, the league dies. It's pretty simple. Sadly, we haven't seen much in terms of new players entering the clan/league side of things (not counting "new" players coming from TFC). Hopefully that'll change in the future, but for now, pickups are likely the closest you'll get to an active league scene.

Thanks for the quick reply, I really appreciate it. Do you think they'd mind someone who's rusty as hell? I still haven't quite figured out how to HH conc yet in this game (I had a special sound file in TFC that helped because I had 56k back then). Bhopping is still a little iffy sometimes for me, too.

As long as you're upfront with your skill level and willing to learn, some people can be helpful. Some people can also be unforgiving. It might be useful to spectate some pickups first, practice things like concing on your own (or ask others for help), and then jump in.

HH concing you simply jump right at on the last beep of the grenade timer, alternatively if you don't jump at all, you will do a mini-HH conc at 75% strength which is fairly horizontal.
Bunny hopping is fairly straightforward given you can now hold space bar to automatically jump every time you hit the floor, so you just need to master air control (turn left and hold strafe left to turn left, etc). Just remember you don't press +forwards to bunny hop forwards (you only use strafe keys) |

What teams did you play for in TFC, Hypno? Your name sounds very familiar.
Ohh and welcome to FF |

I don't really have a chronological order, but you probably might have seen me in **KEA**, TeH. , mF. , [inferno], [FOoM] (briefly), [FU] also briefly, I was in {ED} for a little bit too. Lots of others i'm almost postiive that no one has heard of / seen unless they were in them, lol.
I was also an admin on Odin's Graveyard, so that's probably where you saw me a lot. Thanks, I like FF a lot, ^^. Also AfterShock, thanks for the tips on HH'in and Bhoping. I think I have bhopping down, but I seem to hit the cap easily or I just plain mess up I'm sure it'll come back to me with more practiace. HH'ing I'm getting the hang of, it's a different monster altogether when you're not compensating for 250+ ping and have to use a special timer ><. (Albeit a bit simpler, as well) Last edited by hypno; 04-24-2010 at 08:28 PM. |

The bhop cap is a soft cap in FF. When you hit it, you just go back down to 140% of your max speed (semi-gradually). If you feel that you're slowing down while bhopping, it's likely not the cap that is doing that.
Also, turn on hud_speedometer 1 to see your speed while bhopping.

you being in KEA and TeH rings a bell as well as your Odin's reference.

...wait what's happening to UGC? I didn't realize that in my absence it was dying. That sucks I guess I should devote some time to UGC again since shit seems to be getting out of hand
Sorry to derail this for a min...but I've been only semi-active for a bit now with school and work and hearing that UGC is dying is pretty depressing to me.

Tis true. To be honest the league was too long to maintain interest, should have been kept short and sweet. Don't know if it's possible to determine a winner in less matches, I don't even know how the scoring worked. There was less motivation in getting people for a match than a friendly just because you knew something wouldn't go right, especially playing the US guys with the time difference. It just didn't work

what's up hypno, I remember you! I just found out about fortress forever a couple days ago and thought I'd check it out...I also just registered here, too. I was really sad when I was looking for a server to play and found out there were hardly any players around.

If you idle in a server a bit (Rocket jump around, or practice concing or something), typically people will join the server. There's an awful lot of people looking at the server list, saying "nvm no one is playing", and not making any attempt past that.

Hey Tam! Usually the TALOS server has some folks in it throughout the day, as well as the european pubs.
TALOS - 207.210.252.163:27015 zE Palace1 (European) - 85.234.148.39:27025 Also [o-t] has a bunch of people on it sometimes too. They have a lot of rules about swearing and stuff though, so be forewarned. [O-T] 206.217.134.170:27016 Talos usually has people in the afternoon / evenings if you're EST (that's when I notice them, anyway). European pub has them off and on during the day, and I haven't been in o-t enough to get a feel of when people start getting on. Glad to see you though man, how you been? |
