Is there any way to widen the website?
I do a lot of random crap on the internet like most, and browse through plenty of websites, and almost all of them condense the website into the middle of the screen, Facebook, Youtube and most browser games and forums do etc...
I know this is to cater to a range of different size monitors, and it's easier to read shorter columns of text like those in newspapers and such. But my resolution is 1920 x 1080, as in HD, and of all of the websites I have been on, which is a vast amount, the Fortress Forever website/forum is the thinnest I have ever come across... the gaps at either side of the website are only slightly thinner than the actual content area. I was wondering if there is a built in setting I have missed somewhere where I could increase the display width, some websites I have been on have that function, allowing you to manually set how wide you want the display to be up to a maximum width of 1050 - 1500 pixels or anything. But the default is usually 800. It's more of a strain for me personally to view an entire website and forum on such a thin strip. Thankfully FireFox 4 allows me to pull this text box to whatever size I want so it's easier to type stuff. And if there isn't a function like that, what do people think about adding one, the most common width I come across, or atleast what appears to be this size, is 1050 pixels wide, which is around the same as Facebook and Youtube among many other websites. FF looks much thinner to me. |

FF was designed a while back when 800x600 was the standard size for sites, and also around that time, completely centered websites were the trendy thing to do.
Nowadays the standard is 960 as monitors are now by default 1024. You can load up a CSS file for the site and force it to display bigger, but the header image will get messed up, and everything will look funky. I am finishing up Iggy's site and will then be focusing fully on FF's site and forums. I'll be bringing it up to date, but that's for me to know and you to see later on.

I made a few userstyles for full-width FF forums a while ago but they no longer work and I can't update them on the userstyles.org site because it refuses to allow me to retrieve my login info. Here are working basic and enhanced versions if you want to try them out (you need the browser addon Stylish):
EDIT: By the way, I can't really vouch that everything works with the enhanced version. It was pretty haphazardly and hackily made, and things have changed a lot since I made it.

Heh, works pretty good, just applied the Basic one, I like
Cheers Squeek. p.s. I changed the width to 60% which feels more comfortable than the full 100% of the screen, thanks for the code though. And thanks for your input Pixel. Last edited by FreaK367; 06-06-2011 at 04:11 AM. |
