Yeah, if she's using myspace, I had the same problem when I was living with my roomate. His wife would come home and start using myspace and the connection would get really slow at times. Probably something with the router.

Those cheap home routers cause most problems with home networks. Seriously

It actually wasn't cheap at the time. It was a "small business" router by NetGear. It had some nice features but some just didn't work and some were useless (Why do home Routers have stupid VPN options?). I have a D-link now and it's ok. Main thing that pisses me off is that it gives out random IP addresses and it's picky about giving out static IPs.

When I said cheap I meant those Netgear work group routers.
They do a horrible job negotiating links and their routing tables get confused at the mac level. What happens is if you have a canned nic the router continually negotiates and renegotiates the link, duplex, speed etc. Eats up half the resources in a lot of cases. I know this first hand by watching packet data in Ethernet links across hundred of these workgroup type switches. If you are having to constantly reset your cable modem or downstream switch in your home network it is almost always going to be the switch or the router and that includes those embedded in the cable modem or dsl modem. They are cheap switches. Especially if you chain multiple switches. Something I have begun to avoid. D-link is a step up. And its pretty fucking cool that you can get a 20 MBs connection that blows out a typical home router. My router is pretty expensive and it's a GB router but realistically if you max it out it's only good for around 50 MB before you see performance issues across the entire SPAN. Which can affect performance of wireless networks connected via a single port off that router.
