The Origins Of "1337"

It was a UDP Port used by the Dead Cow Cult to hack you with Back Orifice.

It pissed me off seeing people with leet in their names ... yet calling us nerds.

I've read that 1337 goes as far back as the eighties.

Back orifice might have used 1337 (actually I believe it was 31337) but I'm pretty sure leet-speak started on BBSs in the late 80s (maybe even earlier?).

Leeb, on the other hand...

That's my understanding Bill. It well predates Windows.

Bulletin Board Systems... even C-64s could access them. The Internet, as it was at that time, was probably too academic for that kind of stuff.

Trust me...you have NO idea how primitive a machine you could use to hack or crack "back in the day". As I did not have a PC back then I actually used a Texas Instruments Thermal Paper Teletype to do the things I used to do.

Visual Output? Check
Adjustable Modem Settings? Check
Adjustable Terminal Emulation? Check
Adjustable Output Formatting? Check

All set.

It was actually alot easier to get into trouble back then. Someone I know did end up getting grabbed by the FBI because he was ALOT more blatant than the rest of us and relied (foolishly) on this homemade black box he built to redirect wiretraces and shield his activity. (pure fantasy IMO)
