Game Suggestions

So I haven't played any modern game for like 7 years. I'd like to know what I missed out on.

I got a new PC several months back and this is what I have played in that time:

Played a little but not finished:
GTA Eps Lib City - Seems good
Prototype - Seems good
Mirror's Edge - Seems good
Dead Rising 2 - Seems good
Portal - Enjoyable
F.E.A.R - Didn't like. looked too old
Fallout 3 - Boring
S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat - Boring and ugly - but only played like 15 min
S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shaddow blah - Boring and ugly - but only played like 15 mins. At least you can run arround like Flash Gordon in these games, unlike Fallout.
Crysis - Looked good but ran crappy. Not bothered since.
Bioshock -Looked good but ran crappy. Feels like a really bad console port.

Finshed:
Singularity - Enjoyed finished (massive Bioshock ripp-off)
Metro - Enjoyed. Finished
HL2 & Eps - Enjoyed. finished.
L4D 1 & 2 Online - Enjoyable.
Batman Arkham - Enjoyable
Res 4 - Enjoyed. Finished.

Online:
L4D 1 & 2 Online - Enjoyable.
AVP new one - Not played.

messy post...lost interest towards the end. so just hit post.
I feel FPS seems to be my prefered genre.

WTF, how can you hate STALKER and Fallout, and I don't get how Bioshock plays like a console port? Bioshock was a well-rounded, smooth game. Did you pirate it?

Yep, I tend to on the expensive ones first. Then buy if I like it.

It's like they never used a mouse on Bio. The sens is so high, even on minimum. I think I had to look for a fix in the end.

Get a different scene release, imo. Some people don't know how to pirate games, and they end up really shitty. I explicitly remember thinking exactly the opposite about Bioshock. Sometimes I can't get the control scheme right on some games because a lot of developers don't compensate for the fact that more and more people have higher DPI mice (EA on BC2 for example).

Stopped reading when you said Stalker was boring and ugly. Play Amnesia.

Amnesia.. I have that actually. Seems OK, not played much. Best played really late at night.

I will give Stalker a good go. But my first impressions were not good ones.
edit: downloading Bioshock demo

Play it in the correct release order:
  • Shadow of Chernobyl (Base)
  • Clear Sky (Prequel to SoC)
  • Call of Pripyat (Sequel to SoC)

Mirror's Edge was gorgeous and seemed like it had a good story but the gameplay was lacking. I don't mind jumping around, scaling the unscalable towers and running around like I'm bat-shit crazy ( I enjoy the AC series immensely) but it just turned me off with some of the situations it put me in.

I realise most of these are not part of your prefered genre, and some are far from recent releases, I still highly recommend them.
  1. Aquaria: high quality adventure game
  2. Shank: fun homage to NES beat-em ups
  3. Amnesia: really good survival horror (give the Penumbra games a try if you enjoy Amnesia)
  4. Super Meat Boy: superb platformer (if you like this and/or platformers in general, play some of the in-game character games (The Kid (I Wanna Be the Guy), Ogmo (Jumper series), Runman (Runman: Race Around the World) and so on)
  5. Trine: enjoyable platformer
  6. VVVVVV: another superb platform (if you use CCleaner, be sure to exclude the save file from cleaning (it is a flash game))
  7. Braid: a great puzzle platformer
  8. Mr. Robot: an enjoyable RPG puzzle platformer with loads of charm
  9. Nimbus: a puzzle time-attack game
  10. Puzzle Dimension: an enjoyable puzzle game
  11. Toki Tori: another enjoyable puzzle game
  12. World of Goo: a puzzle game
  13. Serious Sam HD (First and Second encounter): fun first-person shoot-em up
  14. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay: an under-rated FPS game, to be honest (also, ignore Assault on Dark Athena, it was pants)
  15. Splinter Cell: Conivction: in my opinion, a good addition to the Splinter Cell series
  16. Killing Floor: fun FPS multiplayer
As a side note, I stopped playing Metro 2033 when I came across the amoebas; they ruined the game for me with their fake difficulty (I had very little ammo (hardest difficulty), and knifing them lead to little success).

S.T.A.L.K.E.R., in my opinion, lacked direction and as such, I ended up uninstalling it half way through the game due to boredom. If it was more linear, I believe I would have enjoyed it more.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I finished Bioshock btw. Good game. I installed Bio 2 but, meh, it seems such a pointless squeal. Just more of the same. I did enjoy it, but by the time I had finished I think I'd had enough of it.

I am sick of these "PC" game that aren't even fit to play on with a mouse. I had to google "mouse fix" and piss about editing configs for both Bio games, Singularity, Borderlands and whatever else I forgot.

Can't believe I haven't played System Shock 1 + 2. I have become a big of a graphics fag since I've played all these modern games. I think I may not feel immersed in it enough to enjoy it. Will check it out anyway.

Minecraft is a maybe. Not really my type of thing. I did try out the free old version. Does seem entertaining with the right people.

I'm a bit biased about this, especially since I'm a huge fan of the series - but I gotta say that the GTA4 era has to be the best in the series. People will say Vice City or even San Andreas was better, but to me I liked GTA3 more than VC or SA, exception to the added gameplay elements in VC or SA. But, GTA4 was on a whole new level, it changed a lot mostly for good, and it had a great story. Sure, it takes a long ass time getting all of the islands unlocked whether you finish the story or not, but it's still a great game overall and I've spent more time fucking around in GTA4 than I have in any other GTA game in the series.

What little bit I've played was great, but I didn't play enough for me to say much more. Some weird graphical glitch for me appears about 2 hours into it. Only game to do this no less.

GET IT NOW!! There's pretty much no reason why you shouldn't have this already... I bought it when I couldn't even play it for the next 3 years (played on friends comp though).

It's a fun game, sure it's a bit dated but it's still a great game overall. If you like creepy ass singleplayer there's your game. I still haven't beaten it because i'm a little bitch when it comes to this game's single player.

Eh. Interest was lost years ago. No comment beyond that.

See above statements.

It's a good game if you can get it to run well on a decent machine. Story isn't the greatest, but the gameplay is pretty solid and the multiplayer wasn't bad either.

It is a console port =/. I stopped playing a few hours into it out of boredom. Didn't seem to live up to the hype it received.

The thing about Minecraft is that you can't exactly be told or shown the game and expect it to be good. You just have to play/experience it.

Playing the old Alpha or even Classic version doesn't compare to the beta now, there's so much new stuff.

Literally, the first time I played it went like this.

----
So, this is the game everyone's raving about? Eh, doesn't seem that great.
Oh hey, I cut down a tree, that's cool.
Oh shit, something blew up in my face. I guess I should make a house.

*7 hours later*
----
What time is it? Holy shit, it's 2:30 in the morning!? Damn, time flew by fast. And all I built was a stone and glass house, and it's not even that impressive =/

Also, all caves lead to SuperCave™, no exceptions.

I am currently in the process of renovating my SuperCave™. I grabbed a map editor though, and hollowed out a monstrous portion of the earth around my established beachhead. Now if only the ogres would quit trying to beat down my door.

SuperCave always reminds me of the Stygian Abyss.
