Anyone use pfSense or FreeBSD as router/gateway?
See title, wondering if anyone has had any troubles with installing on a virtual platform.

Can't say I've ever used any of these, let alone in a vm environment.
Though every time I try anything in vm environment there's always some problem with networking. I am talking about the desktop virtualization suites(vmware workstation, virtual pc/server, virtualbox) of course, not ESX, Xen or Hyper-V since I don't have any experience with those unfortunately. What they actually seem to have the most problems with is both name-resolving(if the DC is in a vm) and routing between several vm's on different physical hosts(problems I couldn't even solve with physical routers, let alone adding a virtual NIC in the range of the other network with manual routing set.) |

I've had trouble with pfSense for the local nonprof I work with. Goddamned thing reads the WAN as 0.0.0.0 even though I've switched out NICs more than a few times in that box.
It's probably Cablevision's fault with their shitty Static IPs... so we'll see how it works once that shit is gone.

Get something it does work on, then change the MAC on the WAN interface through pfSense to reflect the mac of the hardware it is working with .. problem solved, and if it's static IP network and you have to set a static IP in a normal router or whatnot to get internet working, make sure you static the ip on the wan interface.
