framerate-probs

Hi there,

while running around in my still unfinished map i noticed that the frame-rate fluctuates extremely. Please have a look at the 2 screenshots, they are from the same pov, but looking into slightly different directions. Notice that the fps drops to 1/4 between the 2. I sealed the window so that this shouldnt have any effect but it made no difference. It seems theres a lot of stuff rendered that cannot be seen. I dont know what to do ...

Do you have any displacements? What could be happening is in the top picture you have displacements that have blocks behind them stopping you from rendering stuff behind them (a good thing) and in the other picture you have no such block and it causes a large portion of your map to be rendered from that view point.

Try looking with mat_wireframe 1 and see what you can see being rendered.

It could also be prop_details I do believe.

Actually yes, that seems to be the issue. On the chart, look at the World Rendering bar. The comparison shots show that the second screen is rendering more. The other bars show this as well, but none as dominantly as that bar.

One thing you could do is make a wall inside of your displacement. This way, you still get the great look of the displacement and the wall that's inside of it stops anything from being rendered.

I had this problem with my first map. I made all of the walls displacements (real curvy) and the entire map was being rendered, resulting in some fairly bad FPS. After putting walls in the displacements it worked fine.

What you did wrong exactly, I can't tell from the screenshots in this thread but if I had to guess, I'd look for func_details in bad spots or displacements with no brushes behind... Remember that func_details and displacements don't block vis.

Check out tutorials on optimization and you'll be able to understand what you did wrong that makes it render the inside of the base.
