I could be completely wrong but I think Western Digital is fighting the inevitable. Frankly I think they went the wrong way with the focus of the Raptor line as well...but perhaps that was more a limitation of their developed technology and not a marketing strategy...

Yeah the current technology is probably already there, and the reasearch and dev has probably been in the works for some time now as far as this goes, so instead of jumping the SSD bandwagon and losing all that cashola, I'm not surprised to see this move by them, and I'm sure some enthusiasts will take this route.
