Freezing ingame

Any ideas why this is happening? Usually it freezes on loading the server, but if I do make it to the game. . .it freezes when I step out of respawn.

amd athlon 64 proc. 3500+

1.78 ghz 960mb ram

ati radeon xpress 200 series

any help would be greatly appreciated

This happens to me in most source games.

Ive got them as low as I can get them, it helped for a little while but my game crashed. Is there a way to check my directx 9 to see if its up to date?
