Shouldn't CD-RWs last more than six years?

I just popped in a music CD I made three years ago into my cd player and it doesn't play. Which is weird, because I remember playing it five months or so ago.

Then I tried another, same dealie (same brand). Brand in question is Sony multispeed. Comes in green packing.

Two of em work- one has archived photos and the other has music on it. I've been playing it recently.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that some of them were burnt on a Mac iBook, and some on a Samsung burner?

But.. whatever it is.. I'm pretty bummed that I lost all my music.

if you want longetivity in digital audio storage, use HiMD. its like minidiscs, but without the compression.

Someone probably used it as a coaster. I personally just keep all my music on my hard drive. I have 50+ gigs right now and a couple hundred tapes and CDs.

statz its best to store your music on an external so if there is ever a chance for power outtage you can unplug it without the worry of damaging the media. i personally keep all essential files on external removable storage. windows and misc garbage is on my internal (games apps etc) whereas word docs, music, pictures, videos, external.

btw u said u have tapes on the hard drive? there is a converter for that? i need to convert cassette into cd for my father. i fugred id just download the music but if i can do a direct rip that would be nice.

I must have been typing too fast, I meant I have hundreds of tapes and CDs also, next to 50 gigabytes on my hard drive full of music.. Is that more clear?

Flash cards or external hard drives are the way to go. More durable and they last longer than CDs.

CDs are the modern floppy nowadays, not the best use for archiving files unless you keep them in pristine condition.

BTW, just so you know:

-CDs should always be kept out of sunlight.
-CDs should always be stored vertically, NEVER horizontally, to prolong their life.

I have an external preamp to which I can connect turntables, cassette modules, etc. For software I can use either the suite of apps that came with my SB XFi or I can use Roxio. I suspect Nero may have something similar. It really isn't difficult to do...just the investment in decent hardware.

I use a 4 track and hook it up to the pc to rip cassettes if need be. Pretty simple process.

OMG!!! You just reminded me of a dirty joke I pulled on a friend about 20 years ago! I picked up one of his 5.25" floppy disks....and told him, "If you shake the disk like this, all the data falls off." as I am shaking the shit out of it.

Then I looked at the disk, got a sheepish look on my face, and simply said..."oops."

You ever see a cartoon character do a "slow burn"? Where their face turns red from bottom to top, kinda slowishly?

He did that.

Until I busted out laughing...and told him it was a joke.

Then he tried to kill me.

Some people have NO sense of humour.

the problem with turbtables is, you need an RIAA filter to reequalise the levels. vinyls are pressed with the low end rolled off, and the top end ramped up. this filter undoes that.

RIAA filter? That sounds notorious.

What does it do? Stamp "THIS RECORD IS COPYRIGHT _______" on the record or something and add DRM to it? d:

no... RIAA filters have been around longer than you, me or indeed DRM has been around. imagine if it was just a flat recording. the bass would kick the needle off th vinyl constantly, and the top end would be so small that it'd sound dull.
