Yeah, I mean, they are completely different games, right? Besides the fact that they have 9 classes, and the same weapons, and a map (2fort) in common. Oh, wait...

TF2 is heavy competition for FF. While they are different versions of the same concept, it is silly to say that they aren't related at all. Five things are gonna happen when both games are out:

1. People will play FF.
2. People will play TF2.
3. People will play FF and TF2, and stick with the game that they like better.
4. People will play both FF and TF2 (probably playing the game they like better more often).
5. People won't play FF or TF2.

Both games will overlap the Fortress-franchise community, but it's impossible to comment accurately on the popularity of each. My guess is that TF2 will be much more popular than FF, but FF will have a small, but dedicated community. TF2 will appeal to people who have never played a Fortress game before, whereas I don't think FF will be able to draw in as many new players as they'd like. BUT - this is all just speculation. FF could really take off if the first release is amazing.

How Immediate is this "Immediate" future because for devs of this mod that could mean 2 months away...

Just because they are both fortress games does not mean that they are close to being the same game. They are very different. The way you move, the graphic style, the weapons you have, etc are all different. TF2 has streamlined the class weapons down while FF has improved upon them.

You must not have understood why I mentioned ET:Quake Wars. It is also a class based team shooter, but you dont see people saying that FF has to beat it to the punch.

And most class based team shooters made since '98 have had a version of 2fort.

How the hell did they 'hope for a 2006 release'. It's half way into 2007 and there are still 'bugs' and 'optimizations to be made'.
lets see here.. you're argueing with a beta tester. who has a better insight into this mod? its certainly not the arrogant fly-on-the-wall neysayer.

i do admit in hindsight, FF would have been quite a disaster if it was released last year, but i guarantee you if you were on the beta team you would certainly see why its been held back so long. i still dont understand why you're here, its almost like you dont want this mod to release? such arrogant presence isn't really welcome here. i dont so much mind the fact that people are negative about FF, its just people like you who seemingly want it to fail.

in all fairness, i dont think steam is the be all end all of advertisments anyway, i mean look at ins mod... that gamespy campaign got a lot of people to download and try it. it wasn't my cup of tea, but then i never expect FF to be everyone's cup of tea either. i seriously don't think TF2 is going to play a major role in FF's success, other than it draws more attention to the whole fortress scene. i mean, how many WW2 or middle east FPSes are out there at the moment?

Do I want the mod to fail? Originally, no. But it's going to fail because the project has been mismanaged and has taken way too long for what it is. So now that it's beyond fucked, why not hope for it to fail.

Taken way too long for what it is? What is it? TF2 surely has taken much longer and is still the same 'thing.' Why not hope for that to fail?

Well, that all depends on how you look at TF2's development. Sure, if you want to take TF2's start date as back in the late 90's then yea, it has taken a long time. However, we know that the project has been restarted numerous times and eventually decided to hold off to use the Source engine. This final version of TF2 has probably been in development for roughly the same amount of time as FF.

In all fairness Valve does have professionals who are used to create games. Surely it might took em only 2 years to create a complete new game. FF doesn't have professional game designer. So I wouldn't say that FF is mismanaged at all, just because it took a year longer than expected. the devs might be unlucky to push for the dec06 release but they are still good in time for what they have done. it's not like they just ported TFC over to Source...
