FATAL ERROR (shutting down): ED_Alloc: no free edicts
We've had an individual, "[ESAD]SiSCoS - STEAM_0:1:148752, come into our server last night and announce he had to restart the server. Over and over again the server crashed with the following error:
L 07/03/2007 - 01:12:02: FATAL ERROR (shutting down): ED_Alloc: no free edicts After checking back logs whenver this error occurred he was in the server. Map was 2fort. We've obviously banned him and his friends, but would like to try and prevent this issue. Any idea what would cause this crash? Scuzzy

I think the error pops up when you have too many enities in a map.
But that doesn't make any sense in this case. EDIT: After a quick google search I found the following: http://www.interlopers.net/errors/index.php?e=5-2 You have too many entities. Either total (4096) or a maximum of a specific entity. Temporary entities such as bullets and particles are also part of this. My bet is that they have a way to spam bullets or particles ridiculously fast. No idea how though |

My friend briefly mentioned how he used to join random servers and crash them by typing something into console, causing it to spam entities (or something of the sort).

Do you know what class he was playing? I know on 2fort there is a way to lag the server really bad.....but I'm not sure about out-right crashing it.
If you find out, let me know so I can warn the other servers I play on.

I honestly have no idea how he coulda done somethin' like this... I mean, most of the stuff calculated server side AFAIK can not be changed by the player. He could not change how many nail sprites spawn etc., or if he did it would all be client side.
This must mean that there is some colossal error that very few people know about that can be used to crash servers. If you can not find out an answer within a few days, I have about half a dozen server owners I can talk to to try and find an answer.

I think it must be a solo-person thing. He did have friends, and from the conversation that was overheard they all knew how to do it. There are several logs where only one of them was in the server, and the error occurred. It would be interesting to see if any other servers have this error in their logs when these guys are online... but I have no idea how easy it is for other admins to review massive amounts of logs.

Could also be an exploit related to 3rd party software you have on the server. Just tryin to help.

These were the three individuals in the server at the time: [ESAD]GhostinG[x7] - STEAM_0:0:5904609 [ESAD]Muchez - STEAM_0:1:11648166 [ESAD]SiSCoS - STEAM_0:1:148752 For anyone who cares, STEAM_0:1:572290 is TrojanMan's steam-id. SiSCos was the only one in the server once, Muchez was in the server himself (without the others) under a different name when it crashed again, so they both apparently have a so-called crash script. I noticed that Trepid_Jesse was a member of their forums back in August of 2004, do you know these guys from ESAD Jesse and do you have any insight as to how to block their script?
