windows vista for the moment is riddled with problems and i would avoid purchasing it because it is not widely compatable with many current applications.

do you remember when xp first came out? all your old games had to be patched in order to work with the oS?

same thing is going on here.

if its temporary get XP home edition. if you dont mind throwing out the extra bucks get XP professional as its more stable and a stronger core operating system then home edition even tho they are almost the same.

You may be buying Vista in the future. Some say it may be an investment now. Some may disagree. Personally, I too would choose XP Professional.

If u are going to buy a new OS, wait for the vista OEM Home Premium or Vista Business.

No point in buying a XP pro for home use at this point in time.

Although XP is the most stable & supported windows OS at this moment, its days are numbered.
In the next year we will see a major push towards vista. Vista is an update to XP, allot of improvements.

Besides nobody liked XP when it was released.

You're in a tough spot though my vote would be for XP at this point. Vista is going to be a dangerous grab bag for a while. Service Pack 1 is supposedly scheduled to release in June and it fixes a number of things that MS has been aware of for a while but will not release them early (most likely) for PR reasons. You also have the issue of built in DRM which may or may not work and still allow you to do all that you want to do. MS's DRM attempts have crap to date and I have zero hope that they're getting it right this time. Vista is eventually going to be what we have to run to keep up with PC Gaming and other advancements.

If you were asking this 4-5 months from now my suggestion would probably be for Vista. Personally, I won't be participating in MS's ongoing beta.

Even with all the bug fixes that Vista will have in store, it still won't be worth purchasing until people start finding ways around its "DRM". Vista will only allow you to play media files that are protected under this drm, which is a huge bummer for musicians and downloaders.

Wait, are you saying you can't just play any random mp3 or divx file on Vista? It has to be DRM content? That doesn't make sense, you couldn't even make a home movie from your camcorder.

no, but if you buy DRM embedded content, it has to be played out through DRM compatible hardware, else they shaft the quality.

It's a guess at this point. The real fun will happen once it hits the consumer markets and starts seeing use. Why risk your enjoyment of your new system on something that could be a big unknown? XP is known and will be relevant for at least this year. It's relatively safe and Vista has alot of unknowns as we have not yet seen the flood of exploits for it yet...they're coming...I feel it in my bones.

at the moment vista is flawed with so much copywrite protection software that it makes it a hard task of installing unsupported software that doesnt have DRM. as the OS will recognize it as stolen, or something like that. and as far as support many drivers need to be made to support the OS. all my sound, motherboard, video card, drivers need to be updated along with my games need to be patched. its recommended to wait for patches to come out if you plan on vista. XP will be supported at least for the next 3 or longer years by game developers the only downside is XP doesnt have DX10 support which most games will not have implemented until maybe next year as most popular game titles are still working on having the majority of their players up to DX 9

IIRC DX10 will make it into XP with SP3 which is not supposed to release until sometime in 2008. SP3 will be the last major security release for XP but extended support will continue until 1-2012.
