Jeez, everyone here is acting clueless and I am reading that there is people already participating in a sort of outside-dev group of testers?!

Man wish there was a news topic about it, atleast give everyone(myself inc.) a chance to brown nose!

Ahhh, the sweet smell of superioty of FF diehards with condescending attitudes over n00bs that have questions. Yep, you smell that too? That's right... it's another "Where's the beef/beta?" thread.

Along with superiority you also smell entitlement, because we're not retarded and/or know how to read

You're right, though: the closed beta has started. In a way, though, closed beta testing has been going on for ages. With a dev team of 30 or so people playing FF periodically, we've had a good opportunity to flush out a lot of the problems. What we've recently done, though, is give the closed beta out to non-dev team members for the first time (like Mulch hinted at). So in that sense, yes, what you probably picture to be a closed beta has started.
how many non-dev would you say are a part of this closed beta? The reason I ask is not to complain of not being chosen or anything but just to get a judgement on how you guys are doing. If the only non dev beta testers are phish... well.. thats not really a beta thats ready for a bigger group...

Does it matter?

All I care about is them freaking releasing the game. It's been well over 2 years now. I can clearly remember back 2 years and updating the FF page every day hoping for a release date...

Just hurry up with finishing it team.

Here's a mod for GTA:San Andreas that's going at about the same pace as FF. They're having a closed beta process, but I think they have a more efficient way of going about it(I think, I don't know what the FF process is).

Quote:
We have recently changed the way our testing system works - from a well-known and used strict alpha schedule, to a nightly build system. This means that we'll be receiving a new alpha build every night at a certain hour, updated with the changes made on the previous day.
This greatly improves our testing efficency, since now we can check the newly-added features or bugfixes soon after they're done, instead of waiting several days for a new release.

Surely compiling and distributing the code every day is a bit much? Maybe later in the cycle, when the only bugs left are the ones youre having real trouble with would this be more efficient.

Agreed, testing daily is a stupid idea imo.

That's often how it's done in the real world.

If i'm working on something myself (programming), then I admit I test as often as I like, which is often as soon as I make a change. But if I'm at work as part of a large project, then testing daily would be a nightmare.

A new build every week would be more realistic for this mod. The GTA mod doesn't take that long to download, who knows how big FF is?

Yeah, back when we were doing little 500 line projects in school we could compile and run after each line pretty much, no problem. But then when you start working with something like the Linux kernel, you better be damn sure you're ready to compile since it takes a few hours.

Why wait? The dev team has an SVN setup, so anyone can pull the latest build whenever they want...

Indeed. I've been doing it for about 4 months, along with 11 other people.

If you're concerned with shipping a polished product, it's a boon if you have the manpower.
