Well having one or two 64 player maps would be something pretty impressive to play. Like 2 "Well" maps glued together from the side with a central flag point for each base. Or an actual battlefield just really big with the flag in bunkers at each end. Would make spy alot more fun

I remember an old PC Gamer I had, previewing Quake2. Talked about 200 player deathmatches being possible

I saw we keep it at 32 for now. Valve is right when they wrote that comment, changeing it to 48 or 64 or such would mean the coders would have to rewrite a lot of the network codes for it to work properly. |

Plus, no server could handle the ammount of rockets, mirvs, nails, pipes, concs exploding at the same time, so they would, undoubtfuly, crash.

Look to the future. In 4-5 years or so I bet you'll see servers handling that many players no problem. Back in the day it was rare as hell to see a 32 player server period. Hardly anyone could afford the price of a server that "big". Now its almost a standard for every gaming community to have a 32 player public server of their own.

Make it a server variable, problem solved surely?

It IS a server variable, but the game has a limit as to what it can run without freaking out. 32 is the limit for how it's currently configured, to set it higher they'd probably have to tweak a lot of code.
So as it stands, you can use anything from 0 to 32 players. Servers can set their own max in that range.

Ah I see, my bad. I thought the max range was a variable too, which obviously it wouldn't be
I still vote set it to something high, like 64+, just because it's a laugh at lans. Don't forget the lans |

Well I don't see any problem with saying "Hey anything past 32 players is something we do not currently support. But you can do it if you want to." Some people would be willing to take on the lag just to do it. Whoever could cap on 2fort against a 32 man team deserves a medal of some kind though.

Sobe is right, and the trepids are wise.
Just put a big warning sticker somewhere. A lot of people don't like servers that big so there's sure to be normal sized servers for people to join when they want. Some people will have big ones to screw around on. This, in turn, will encourage people to make maps for large numbers of people. 4-way ctf would begin to be more feasible, armies clashing across a battlefield, huge fleets crashing into eacother, nations at war, etc. ff_4tron could support way more than 32 players. The bases are probably a bit cramped for 64 but 40 total players could probably be right at home there. (Although the map itself is already fairly stressful on a system and that many players might make the server cry). But still! Maps can be so much bigger in source anyway. |

Apparently this Mark guy that works at some big company could run the most powerful FF server ever. In fact, apparently his company's computers can handle multiple 64 player servers at the same time. But we'd never get to experience that, cause the limit would be 32...such a shame.
He's kind of a creep, but he mentioned it last night... Quote:

please OH please FF GODS, make it 64 with a BIG freaking warning sticker/comment!!!
I have 12x dual operton 248 ( 2.2 ghz each ) servers with 4 gb ram in each, I'm sure my server's can handle it, if it can't I can easily up the ram to 8 GB without huge expense in a few of them, even up the processors a bit as well..... but main thing is, there were pentium 4 - 3.0 ghz SINGLE core SINGLE processor systems running 32 player's TFC 1 without any problems, freezing, lag or anything, p4 is 10 years old, I can get a quad operton if I need for a 64 player server and have some serious fun~!~!!! Oh, and for you losers that think there is no map that can handle 64 players, remember how big RED PLANET for tfc1 was? Well if they port it into FF, holy CRAPOLA~!! That map was huge, it would take a scout 3 minutes to cap a flag with zero opposition... lol.... BEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAAAAAA TEST!!! BETA TEST! BETA TEST! Common fella's, we're waiting.... I won't mind at all running some beta test server's for FF Only question is how much bandwidth you need, got 20 mbps dedicated connection..... and don't want all of it for a single FF server... |
