Some of the effects, namely depth of field and motion blur, were applied via post-processing features built into the Source engine technology.
If I'm reading this right... the video won't be completely genuine in-game footage?

It will be completely genuine in-engine footage. Do not think that "post-processing feature" necessarily means that you won't see it in-game. HDR is a post-processing feature, for instance.

However, DOF and MB require way too many resources to be included in live games as of now. What happens is that they record a demo, then play it back while the engine applies the effects, in fact just like you would render a 3d animation in softwares such as 3dsmax, etc..

remember the scratchy sepia DoD videos? i think that was post processing too. it's aparently not a realtime effect though, due to performance overheads:

Simple DoF is possible to implement using early versions of SM (1.4 i think iirc) so it may be possible to use in realtime, but I may be talking out of my arse as I've never coded a DoF shader or read too much about it. Motion blur can be fairly expensive as, depending on the approach you take, it can involve rendering the same model more than once. I wouldn't be shocked if they are able to have both running in realtime and the game still be playable.

DoF was done in garrysmod, so yeah its possible. motion blur is probably just as cheap to run

You are right. For example, GMod implemented both in a somewhat crude but effective manner. However, I read the DOF and MB Valve implemented are not of the "cheap kind" and are specifically made to look good and not render fast. I'd be happy if that was wrong though.

Post-processing is a term used to describe certain types of effects. It doesn't generally mean it's not rendered in realtime (or in this case, that it is realtime but too slow to use normally). Post-processing is basically (this is not a definition :P) rendering a scene, and then doing further work on that rendered image before displaying it. We won't know whether it's feasible to run the game with these effects until more info is forthcoming

What a letdown. No gameplay footage at all, just a moving pictures version of the... picture.

Seems real enough for me... not sure if it's going to be the same one as announced or not.

In-game (perhaps) for some of it, but seems more like a movie preview given the camera angles and movement.

The pyro flame was quite impressive!
