Cable modem recommendation?
I'm in the process of moving (we've bought a new home here in Joisey), and I'm going to go from the DSL provided by my current place as part of the deal to Comcast cable at my new place (since FIOS is not available yet).
I can either rent a modem or buy one, and I've decided to buy one since I would pay for it anyway in 18 months. These are the ones I am currently considering, but each has good and bad reviews: Motorola Surfboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825122106 Zoom Telephonics http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825115120 D-Link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825112104 Linksys Etherfast http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825120101 I'll be attaching my Linksys WRT54G router to it, if that makes any difference (shouldn't, but you know how these things go) Any recommendations? Help? |

The one that goes the fastest is the D-link. You gotta look at the transfer rate.

I would just get one which takes the cable and gives you eathernet.
My friend has one that plugs in via USB and has eathernet and I just wouldn' trust that (exspeshaly if you are going to use a router. |

Had a surfboard now for a couple years and it's been great. Much better than the POS Adelphia gave me to start off with.

Back when I had cable I used a Surfboard modem as well, never had any problems out of it. Also like Mooga said, AVOID USB based internet. It will screw you up faster than you can say "Do it". I had tons of trouble when my grandmother tried to do this, and every time you restarted the computer it couldn't figure out wtf was going on, and would disable the internet every startup. USB = Headache. Just use ethernet, no matter what it takes...
(Note: I am only complaining about internet via USB, nothing else) |

in the fwiw category, I have perhaps a wee bit of technical knowledge... The reason I asked was that on the various review sites out there, I've found good and bad reviews on every cable modem there is... so I thought I'd look for real-world experience from others, especially since I've not bought one of these before.
Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I found the Surfboard at Circuit City for $39 after rebates, so I've decided to get that one. |
