What power amp should I get ?
Since there are a few guitar players here I imagine someone will be able to help me.
Guitar => PodXT Live => ? Power Amp ? => Marshall 1960A/Lead I have a Marshall EL84 20/20. It's pretty good but the fan is way too noisy for my tastes. I'm looking for an all tube, silent (fanless or with silent fans), good power amp with 8 ohm stereo output. As of wattage, 20 watts per channel are plenty enough. Any suggestions ? I can let 500/1000 euros go. here's a pic of my rig in case you're into instruments/guitar. there's also another acoustic folk guitar not included in that pic. ![]() Last edited by o_ivaqual; 05-29-2006 at 07:50 AM. |

i'd personally stick with the marshall EL84. a lot of tube power amps have a mains hum, because the heaters are normally on an AC circuit, thus naturally noisy. i don't really know what to sugest exactly, but solid state amps tend to be a lot quieter.

I never realised that you = him. And I can't help you, I have no experience with pwoer amps. I'm just saving up now to get an amp better than my 10 watt yamaha. I'm going for a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Last edited by o_qwertyuiop; 05-28-2006 at 10:48 PM. |

wow.....you're the first person I've ever ran across who's prime requirement in a guitar amp was for it to be quiet. Surely you've got other requirements like RMS wattage and have a strong preference for a particular manufacturer's sound? What about budget?

Haha, I must say my OP was ambiguous. By "silent" I ask for the unit itself to be silent, as in "no fans" or "silent fans". Updated OP with more info. I have no manufacturer preference as I'm not terribly experienced with PAs.
I'm looking for possible ideas and general directions to go here. Hehe I didn't know you posted there qwertyuiop, what's your username ? I stopped going to MF a long time ago, I rarely post there nowadays so it's normal you didn't notice me. |

I liked the quote about the pre-amp making it sound nice and the power amp to remove your head.

Mesa/Boogie Stereo 2:Fifty or Recto Stereo 2:One Hundred!
Im a huge fan of the mesa sound, after i owned a mesa myself i can never seem to find that cool, powerfull and awesome sounding distortion with alot of bottom and not just bzzz like alot of Marshals tends to give in my opinion. Edit: Just saw what you said about watts, then: Mesa/Boogie 20/20 Stereo!

technically, fender amps go up to 12, and my marshall's preamp on the boost section goes up to 20, but ya.
mesas are fucking sweet sounding, but you pay dearly for it. |
