Ask any Belgian, and they'll probably tell you that they invented the things, not the french!

But they eat mussels with their chips, so I'm not sure how reliable they are.

Well I mean there are different types of fries. You've got fast-food fries (regular or curly) and then you've got store-bought or home-made. Either of the last two can be as big/bigger than the "chips" from the picture. We used to make some fat ass fries with our burgers... back when I had money to buy food.

I remember when that was floating around America like the newest fad since myspace; got pretty boring pretty damn quickly however, mainly because it was fucking stupid.
