Engineer VS spy sabotage time

Can someone clear this up for me.

Friday, while I playing on crossover, I had my sentry built in the flag room. After the first time or two this spy sabotaged my sentry I learned - if someone is at your sentry SHOOT THEM! The timing was just right, I was watching my gun, a spy ran up to it. The spy came up the spiral and went to my gun. I was standing right there - and started shooting him with the shotgun.

The spy was able to turn my gun on me before I could kill him with my shotgun.

Is this by design / was this on purpose? Is the spy sabotage time, and the engineers damage balanced out?

Should I use the rail gun instead of the shotgun to defend my sentry gun? Or is a grenade required for the fastest way to kill a spy?

What is the fastest way to kill the spy BEFORE he can sabotage my gun?

I know the proper answer is to stop the spy from getting to the sentry to start with, but besides that answer!

I would either detonate the sg, or use the railgun, since it does blast damage, and send him into the air a bit, thus aborting the sabotage? I just came up with that ^ lol

if the spy is shot the sabotage timer resets, and he has to attempt to sabotage again which will probably be impossible because he should be dead by then

I think the timing is right. even though ive seen spies sabotage my sg in 2 seconds, what they do is strafe around it instead of blankly stare

just a suggestion i think if you witness the spy sabotoge the sg , i think after you kill the spy ( for me this happens a lot ) if you go back up to the sg before it trips out and starts tk'ing everybody i think if you repair it , it should un-sabotoge ... ?

Would be impressed if an engy managed to un-sabotage haha.

And yes, as others have said, if you're shooting the spy he won't be able to sabotage it due to his timer getting reset.

I dunno, I killed a full health full armor Spy with my wrench >.>

And he couldn't sabotage.

Spies have to continue with looking at the SG to fill their sabotage meter. Also moving it slightly a bit will cancel the bar and force them to start over.

The pistol of Engineers is the best option to be honest, since it knocks 'm back a bit

Just to confirm what some have said, when you shoot a spy with anything (essentially just damage them) then the hacking bar resets to zero. Hell, you can fire your shotgun every 1 second and they can't hack it. Most spys will run after the first shot though because if they are far away enough they have a chance to escape/cloak. So really it doesn't matter what you use as long as you hurt them.

On a side note, an infection makes it impossible to hack, so if you have a med in the area just ask them to heal everybody that comes in and a spy can move around while hacking your SG as long as they do it right

currently, if you kill the spy before he activates it, he loses his sabotage. he has to come back and try again

imo i think if you kill him , and he has sabotoged then you should be able ( as engy ) to go up to the sg before it starts triping and fix it tho ( theres a like 2 or 3 second window where it does the sound like its going crazy )

This sounds like the best idea so far.

I would like to know what was going on - how could a spy sabotage my sentry gun while I was blasting him at the same time?

How long does it take a spy to sabotage a gun?
