I can't get past "Retrieving Server Info"

Everytime I load a map, I get stuck on Retrieving Server Info. I've waited at most 30 min before ctrl alt deleting, or until my computer freezes up.

Do you have any problems connecting with other Steam games? Even if not, you may be blocked by your firewall, either in the router or your Windows Defender.

No, that's not it. I turned off all firewalls/antivirus software. This doesn't happen with any other Source game I have

I have exactly the same problem Formless, and there are others also awaiting a solution.

I suspected it may be my firewall blocking the connection but it's not that.

I have been unable to play thus far.

this happens to me often, if it goes straight to retrieving server info, i know it will stay there forever, however if it does some other loading steps first, i know it will work

Try creating your own server before connecting to an online server.

I can't create a server, at least, under 30 minutes of loading. By that time I got fed up.

I had the same problem. What I did to fix it was: a) disable all anti-virus software and b) disable in-game Steam Community.

I have the same problem.

I don't have a firewall running.

Fresh install of Steam (updated) and fresh install of FF.

No antivirus running. No antispyware running. No problems connecting to any other Steam games.

Another possible fix I've heard is to actually run the Source SDK Base all the way through, as well as validating the files.

I was having this same exact problem loading any map on a local server or internet server, hope this helps you.

I followed the instructions under Section 3 from:

http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-...hp?p_faqid=397

Quote:
3. Use Game Launch Options to Troubleshoot Components
Disable your sound card through the Windows Device Manager and try running the game. Please see the Troubleshooting Device Conflicts with Device Manager Microsoft Knowledgebase article if you would like instructions to disable the device. (If disabling the sound card resolves the issue, please see the How to manage devices in Windows XP Microsoft Knowledgebase article to resolve the device conflict)
Review the Setting Game Launch Options topic for instructions to test the game with these launch options: -nosound -window -dxlevel 70 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 (If these launch options do not resolve the issue, skip the remaining steps in this section and proceed to the next section)
If the game runs without crashing, remove the -nosound launch option and set the DirectX hardware sound acceleration to "BASIC" by running DXDIAG, selecting the Sound tab, and then moving the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider to the second-lowest setting. (If this setting does not resolve the issue, skip the remaining steps in this section and proceed to the next section)
If the game continues to run without crashing, you may remove the -window launch option and review the Reset Video Settings and Force a Video Mode topic for instructions to slowly increase the -dxlevel, resolution, and detail levels until you find a working level.
The -dxlevel 70 setting made the game work for me.

Once I reinstalled DirectX 9, the game would run finally.

I don't know why in the blazes I had to reregister here...but.

I had this problem too, and disabling the in-game community and running the SDK base all the way through fixed mine.
it also fixed my clan mate.

I would call this a bonafide fix.

I'm still having this error and have tried disabling the steam community, which didn't resolve the problem. It's odd because the beta worked for me, but I cannot join any game regardless of the map or start my own server, because it hangs during the loading screen. I have to cntl alt delte and end hl2.exe as well as gameoverlay.exe or whatever it is, and then my explorer refreshes (background disappears for a bit and then reappears) and I'm brought back to my desktop. This is unfortunate and I've never experienced this with another Source mod. Can the developers please verify that they are aware of this issue and looking into it? A simple, "we hear you and are looking at it" would be satisfactory, but total silence on the issue is disturbing me.

hey i went to the steam forums and looked around and found a few things, one of them helped me and i was finally able to run FF flawlessly and lag free.

All's i did is go to 'My Games' screen and right click on FortressForver Icon and go to Set Launch Options and put -autoconfig

and it autoset what would be best for my system and i connected first try, didnt lock up

you all try it and see if it helps you, its funny how the first server i joined were all these ''elites'' trying to tell the noobs to gtfo out of the server because they didnt know how to play. sad but at least i can play now for the moment

also before you put in -autoconfig, press space bar once and then put it in
