Inspirations

I figured this would be a good, high-level, imagination-driven thread.

Please post things that give you inspiration to make maps.

I'll start.
This might seem simple, but google.
I work in NYC and i see a lot of cool architecture. Things from subway stations to parking decks are very FUN things to create in HAMMER. Go think of somewhere cool with great atmosphere, google it up. Take a look at some pictures.... start drawing a sketch... create.

Next....

I live in one of the top 5 oldest cities in Texas, so there is alot of interesting architecture that I look at for my city maps.

I live in Newark, NJ. There is an interesting mix of gothic, French, Italian, and Rococo architecture. There is also way more postmodern crap than there should be. (How I hate the 80's postmodern boom!)

I do not map much (I have tried and failed D: ), but I get a lot of good ideas for architecture and the like from there. Newark is one of the oldest cities in the nation... some of the buildings have been around as long as the mid 17th century.

The best inspiration i have had recently came when i was experimenting with different shapes for a ramp and has shaped the theme of the whole level. Deviant art is a very inspiring place also.

I live in the worst place for interesting architecture ever. Google image search fills that gap. Plus, redoing everything I do until it looks somewhat decent helps.

I love Europe. Germany and the Czech Repuplic I have been to(I don't really count England, since that was only a layover and we didn't leave the airport). I want to move to Germany one day. It is my focus, it shall become reality.

Put in an adjective describing the term you are searching for which describes the theme or the intended impact of the term.

For example searching for "modern corridor" will get corridors in the modern style (usally minimalistic style with plenty of curves - perfect) getting much better (read relevant) results that simply searching for "corridor".

Another example searching for "polluted river" to get inspiration to fill a midfield of an industrial map will get the best results rather than just "river". This can be applied to most generic terms very well the more specific terms like workshop or factory floor for example do not need adjectives to get relevant results but if you need something specific it may help.

Inspiration for me has come from movies, architecture, and pondering on different historic eras. One of the best 3d art lessons for me was copying an Unreal map to TFC. Oh there's been one other influence... other mappers' maps. Y'all are a ton of influence on my maps.
