Can you run FF without Source SDK Base?

By SRCDS do you mean Source Dedicated Server? Because for playing FF, that's certainly not required. What you DO need is the ability to get Source SDK Base (comes with almost all HL2-related products).

So i have to buy a Valve/Steam product to play? I thought this game was free...
I may as well just get TF2 then..

Let me just say, that if you're complaining on having to buy one of the many awesome products out there that give you the source sdk base, just to play this awesome game, then you can fuck right off. There's plenty of awesome games out there that you can get for cheap, and still get to play this game. TF2 will even give you what you need to play FF.

If you get TF2, then you can also play fortress-forever!

It's called a mod, this is short for modification. It allows people to develop content for a game engine, free of charge. The catch, is that you have to have a license to use the engine to view said content. Consider it Adobe Reader for videogames.

You can get HL2:DM for $10 and play all free HL2 mods ever created forever and ever.

Install it, and make sure you install the Source SDK Base that comes with it(it will be listed under "Tools", not "Games"). After that, DL and install Fortress Forever, and away you go.

Don't be discouraged if you aren't a master of it right away.... I'm on the beta team and even I don't know all of it's nuances. Take the time to configure the keys to your liking, and don't hesitate to ask other players how they do things. If someone on a server is rude(not helpfull), come here and we can answer your questions.

I still can't get steam to work right, or the svn to work, and I've been helping people move, so there's really been no time for FF lately.
