http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/12/...rated-pc-games
Yeah. So much for DRM stopping stuff like this from happening. "BUT THEY HAVE TO PROTEECTAT THAMSELFS!" Lol. Nearly two million pirated copies of Spore. Protect indeed.

This is a classic example of fail. This is considered fail because not enough skill was applied to the task at hand. However, this example of fail is also consired epic because..... they freakin' blew it.

true story:
One of my regular customers came in inquiring about a notice she had received about some overdue films. She came in, as usual with her 18 year-old son, who was also a regular customer. She comes up to the counter and askes about the films she owes, and we pass it off to the new girl, as a training exercise. Everybody else working in the store that day knew what films were rented by the client, so we wanted to have some fun with the new girl. The girl begins to look at the client's account history and says, "It looks like you rented Pirates of the Carribbean and Some foreign film named Emanuel." The customer says she will go home and try to find these movies, but doesn't know what the covers look like. The new employee generously offers to pull the boxes from the rental shelf so the client can see what she is looking for. This is what she returns with. and The mother beat her son all the way back to the car, with the entire store's staff laughing our asses off. It's a shame the new girl didn't know that "Pirates", was not the same as "Pirates..." |

And what movie place rents the movies to you with the box art intact? They all come in those plastic sleeve things.

Blockbuster and Movie Gallery have been doing that, at least locally.

I'd say Blizzard would be laughing more than either company.
And they've been saying that PC gaming is dying LONG before this article. And Stardock laughing? Seriously? |

Stardock did relativly well with Sins of a Solar Empire, and that had literally no DRM. Oh yes, i forgot about Blizzard. Them, with WoW, defintaly will be laughing the hardest of all.

I would say Fallout 3 has done very well considering it being a game with little to no DRM (uses Securom for CD checks). Although it is newer than Spore, I also think it was a bit more anticipated than Spore was.
All Stardock titles do fairly well in sales. The company is still alive and in good financial condition and only uses CD keys as a means of DRM. They're making Demigod, a game that will probably sell very well around the world due to its DOTA influences. And the fact that it's a bad ass looking DOTA. Sins did decently, but it's not the best example of DRM free games that do well. Galactic Civ 2, another game by Stardock, did much better... although both did well enough to net the company plenty of cash. Mainly, the issue is this. Game companies, like EA, spend lots of money on slightly above average games that sell well but get pirated even more. They blame things like piracy and the economy on poor game sales (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/937/9371...0&RSSid=937174) instead of on things like... them making slightly above average games and paying >tons< of money for them. They don't run a smart business. You don't spend insane amounts of cash to make a slightly above average game. You spend insane amounts of cash to make a ground breaking, genre defying game. EA has yet to do this, and they aren't doing that well. They are trying, but the quality of games they make has been kind of lacking. Edit: I will say that there are four good brands they have created recently that have had decent quality. Rock Band Mirrors Edge Dead Space Skate
