Playing on 3g network?

I work on the river as a Captain/Pilot on the Miss,Ohio, and Illinois Rivers. Live on the boat for 4 weeks at a time so I have a lot of downtime and would like to play when I can. Before I purchase a new Steam account I would like to know if anyone has xperience playing over a wireless network with any success. I know WOW can be played over a dialup connection with some success (though I dont play it). I have a pretty sweet laptop that I play a lot of single player stuff like AIX, COD4, but that gets old after a while.

I think you're in for frustration playing anything that's latency and bandwidth sensitive on a mobile network.
