Avoid smoothing if you can. If you're doing sandy/dirty/natural floors, then it helps other than that you're probably better off moving each vertex by hand individually.

srry? displacements and water are a quite good combination, but make sure that when you make something like an island, the water is not below the whole island. the larger the water surface, the lower the fps.

and smoothing is really fucked up since the august 2006 update.
