I went on IRC the other day, I had the same problem as you. You have to authserv yourself, signup here:

This guy speaks the truth, the channel has the mode that forces you to be auth before entering the channel. Quakenet is a joke, get out of it before the world collapses. Register an account with gamesurge and join #fortressforever

Been idling there for a few weeks.......the only thing Ive seen thus far is Hells Wrath and his nazi symbol scroll from time to time.
Oh, and had a short convo with Circuitous once.

No, see, I actually do follow the rules quite plainly. What I'm saying is, others don't, and they get away scott-free 'cuz the ops are all idling. As in, they're not there.

That's how IRC channels are, you just gotta get used to it. Most of the time, any channel will be dead with absolutely no one active. Not like it matters, the channel serves no real purpose right now since the mod isn't released. So no need to worry about someone braking the basic rules of channels, making one furious.
