I pine for the days when MS was all about making game developers happy.

I still want to hear more about DX 10 though.

Longhorn was supposed to be the 'perfect' windows. But MS saw it wasn't possible and let the project aside.

No, it still lives
perhaps you're thinking of some of the features MS removed that people actually wanted AND that they could not implement and maintain a reasonable delivery schedule?

Innoc, you must be thinking of Server Longhorn?

Quote:
Windows Server "Longhorn" is the codename for the next server operating system from Microsoft. It will be the successor to Windows Server 2003, and will be called Windows Server 2007 or 2008, depending on its release date[1] — it is known that Microsoft intends to keep the year based naming scheme of its server products. According to Bob Muglia, senior vice president of servers and tools at Microsoft, the current release timeframe for Server "Longhorn" is the second half of 2007[2].
Server "Longhorn" will be the server equivalent of Windows Vista (previously also known by the codename "Longhorn"), and is likely to contain many of the same features, as well as others aimed specifically at high-end users. This is a similar relationship to that between Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (codenamed "Whistler" and "Whistler Server", respectively).

You guys had better tell Microsoft that their server's been renamed. Personally I'd take MS's website as being a better source than Wiki but that's just me.

Maybe you missed this from microsoft's site then....

Quote:
Microsoft Windows Server code name "Longhorn" is the next-generation Windows Server operating system that helps IT professionals maximize control over their infrastructure with increased security, reliability, and functionality.

Edit: Even found their FAQ for "Longhorn"

Quote:
Q.When will you announce the official name for Windows Server "Longhorn"?

A.Quality is our first priority for product development. We have not established the official name for the product yet. While our goal is to deliver Windows Server "Longhorn" in 2007, as always Microsoft will take the necessary time to deliver the best-possible quality product for its customers and partners.

It's called Longhorn presently. Even in your quote from wiki it says it "WILL" be called...not IS called. Presently it is the Longhorn server.

I'm trying to figure out what you are trying to point out with your replies...

Let's see if I have the sequence of events correct....

You say " Longhorn is next year isn't it? (not certain and too lazy to look it up)"

To which I ask "Wasn't Longhorn the codename for Vista?"

To which you respond that Longhorn is the name of the server

To which I give a link saying that Windows Server Longhorn is the code name for the next Server version of windows and that Longhorn was also used as the code name for Vista (maybe you missed this part. You can confirm that Windows Vista was once called "Longhorn" as well at http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/p...7-22LHMA.mspx).

To which you say I should notify microsoft that they got the name wrong on their website.

To which I point out that they do in fact call it a code name on their website.

To which you now say it's called Longhorn presently??????????

I don't know how to make this any more simple. The next server is called Longhorn. Honestly I don't recall what Vista's code name was. It's called Vista now. Longhorn is the server. That's what it's called now. MS plans to call it something different in the future.

Move on with this.

Windows Longhorn, like a year and a half to two years ago, was the name of their next OS. It was renamed Vista, and now Longhorn is the codename for the server instead. They switched it around.

It's not a difficult concept, nor is it a big deal.

They didn't switch, it was always:
Longhorn = Vista
Longhorn Server = no name yet ($100 on "Server 2008")

just like
Whistler = XP
Whistler Server = Server 2003

I felt dumber reading this thread.
I feel like darkness24713 now, after replying to this thread.
