Another reason to love EA

Shacknews posting

Anyone else hear about spyware-like monitoring software in BF2142? This is the first I've heard about it. If true...I will NOT be buying it.

EA is a dispicable company, they bought out Westwood (one of my fav game developers) and SHUT IT DOWN. Taking down one of my fav MMOs, Earth and Beyond. They can go "suck a fuck".

The ammount of problems BF2 generated on my system, from hardware malfunction to page-file corruption and balance issues where a tank shell cant take down a chopper and the game turns into a flight sim with living targets... they dont deserve a single penny of my money.

What theyre betting on is the core BF players who will ignore the controvercy and buy the game and then be fed the ads, to offset the players lost due to this policy. Kind of like charging $10 for a candy bar and selling it to 20ppl, vs charging $15 and only being able to sell to 15. Capitalist ideology at its worst.

When they told me I couldn't play my level 121 Terran Enforcer anymore, I lost all respect for EA games. Seems I won't be buying this either.

I've noticed alot of people hating bf in these forums. Besides all the bugs, it's an amazing game with a huge fun factor. I don't get it...this is what TF2 was originally going to be pfft!!1

Did you read the link Smax? Even if EA hasn't done something already to irritate or alienate you does the fact that they're putting "phone home" software into BF2142 to report on your habits that have NOTHING to do with the game not bother you? Even a little?

No Nezumi, I have not and will not buy 2142, I own the original BF2 and regret it. In regards to capitalism at its worst I'm talking about the pricing formula discussed in the previous sentence and their hostile take-over strategies. They take over good developers and shut them down because they are competition and absorb whatever remains like the borg. Most game developers, to counter this once being absorbed, actualy break apart so EA cant have the entire team... like what Westwood did.

Yeah, I miss Westwood as well. I am having trouble picturing EA doing something as creative as having live actors, like Kari Wuhrer, doing live action cut scenes and voice acting for a game.

Here is the / . posting about the article...

http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/17/1319235

One of the things I found interesting was the text of the "agreement" with EA:

Quote:
The Software may incorporate technology developed by IGA Worldwide Inc. ("IGA") (the "Advertising Technology"). The purpose of the Advertising Technology is to deliver in-game advertisements to you when you use the Software while connected to the Internet. When you use the Software while connected ot the Internet, the Advertising Technlogy may record your IP address and other anonymouse information ("Advertising Data"). The Advertising Data is temporarily used by IGA to enable the presentation and measurement of in-game advertisements and other in-game objects which are uploaded temporarily to your personal computer or game console and changed during online game play. The Advertising Technology does not collect any personally identifiable information about you, and EA will ont provide IGA with any of your personally identifiable information. The servers used by the Advertising Technology may, from time to time, be located outside your country of residence. If you are located within the European Union, the servers may be located outside the EU.

By installing and using the Software, you agree to: (i) the transfer of the Advertising Data to servers located outside your country of residence and, if applicable, outside the European Union; (ii)the collection and use of the Advertising Data as described in this Section; and (iii) the delivery of advertising and marketing content by the Advertising Technology. IF YOU DO NOT WANT IGA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, OR TRANSMIT THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, DO NOT INSTALL OR PLAY THE SOFTWARE ON ANY PLATFORM THAT IS USED TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET."
