well, what do you want to do? If you want to model something with animations it could take a while. Animations are the most hard.

Modding for HL2 requires a few programs. If you just want to do hack jobs (which as a beginner Id highly recommend) then you'll need the following:
Milkshape3D (the backbone of all Valve product modding) MDLDecompiler.exe GUIStudioMDL.exe(for compiling) SourceSDK files(downloaded from Steam) VTFEdit(for textures, which In HL2 have command lines strapped to them) and a lot of practice and New Folder(#)s laying all over your desktop I couldnt really point you in the direction of any good tutorials or links for those programs, but google was a big help to me and if you have any experience with modding the old Half Life you'd realize its almost exactly the same. So alike in fact you can port models back and forth using the same programs listed above. Now if your modding from scratch (no mesh, skeleton, animations, textures) then I wish you luck because its not easy to make all that by your self |

go to www.fpsbanana.com and look for their tutorials, they have lots and some are very newb friendly
http://www.fpsbanana.com/tuts theres a link straight to the tutorials other than that I suggest facepunch @ www.facepunchstudios.com they have a forum that might provide helpful for you, but I have no experience in how 'nice' their community is best of luck to ya |

NO! not facepunch. THE worst forums EVER! I reccommend interlopers.net. VERY newb friendly. I was making my first map in Hammer, which was supposed to be my Science project. i went to interlopers, and my map was on my way (other things beside mapping there of course). I got an A+ on my project, mostly because www.interlopers.net helped me so much. I even gave em credit in my project!

Hello DarkieJ.. are you looking to create your own models? Download the free Softimage XSI Mod Tool (a 3d modelling and animating program) and mess around with it.
There are several free Tutorial videos available from Noesis Interactive, check them out here. Valve's Wiki has tutorials on XSI as well - browse the wiki for more interesting information! The video tutorials on iwannamap.com are awesome as well - check out their tutorials section here.. That's what comes to mind at the moment.. feel free to ask questions in this forum.. even though i am far from an expert (actually a noob at source modding), maybe other forum users can help out though! |
