(HELP) FPS really low!

Hello.

I'm loving this game, but the only thing which is a major issue for my gameplay is the FPS.

It seems in quiet areas of a map it's 50-60, but as soon as i come into some action it drops really low, into the red at around 20-10!

now i havn't really edited my config or anything, or my gfx options for my nvidia card because i don't really know the best options to change/set so that's why i'm posting this to see if anyone can help me out?

Anyways, here's my system specs, so you can get a better idea:

Windows XP SP2
Athlon XP 2400+ MMX 2GHZ
1GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti4200 8X 128MB (On DirectX 9.0c)

Now i think that's a good enough system to run HL2/Mods if i was to say the only thing holding it back would be the GFX card which i know is pretty old now, but i'm sure i should be getting better FPS that i am currently..?

So could anyone please help me out? i havn't had a good game yet cause of this dreaded low FPS..

Thanks & await feedback.

Forgot to mention that i'd done that already, doesn't seem to make any difference for me..?

If anyone was to recommend a new gfx card to buy which would work with the rest of my system? what would you all recommend? but buying a new card is a last resort right now.. :\

nbar, it seems to me that that PC isn't anywhere near enough to run FF at a good rate.

I had a 2500 running at over 3200 speeds, 2GB Ram, 7800GS and I wasn't getting great FPS.

omega drivers

http://www.omegadrivers.net/

Omega drivers usually provide at least a 15 fps increase.

i HIGHLY highly reccommend you run in DX8 or DX8.1 mode. it will boost FPS alot.

That graphics card won't run in DX9 anyway.

I'm using a 8800GTS 640MB, and you would be suprised how much Fortress Forever is dropping my FPS. From 200, 300 to 60FPS. Fortress Forever does require quite a lot from the computer & video card to run smoothly. I do play it smoothy though, even with the fps decrease. But it doesn't really matter to me.

The graphics card is an no brainer and from what I hear FF relies very heavily on CPU. I don't think your PC is up to the task to expect anything other than ultra low FPS.

Maybe try running -dxlevel 70.

Which is what I'm doing as I prefer FPS > graphics and choppiness. Makes it very playable with a 6800, AMD 3000+ 2ghz and 1GB of RAM. :>

What kind of FPS do you get with that setup?

Try setting r_dynamic 0 from console.

That may help by eliminating the dynamic lighting that happens from explosions.

im running on a geforce 4 MX with 1GB of RAM. my FPS is usually around 30-40 with no action, with moderate action, around 20 FPS. really, since im not total hard=core player, i dont care bout FPS. neither GFX, since im running in DX7

My fps drops radically if I aim to water. Jump from around 140 to 50, 60 fps however this don't annoy me. If this is your case then change water reflect setting at advanced video options.

im in DX7. i cant even have any reflecivity in my case, lol. gives me a slight advantage though: i can see right into the water, without any relctions blocking my view. and it gives me a slight disadvangtage: i cant see anything above when im under the water, yet in DX9, i saw that you could, yet semi-distorted, which looks awsome

I have a system similar to the thread-starter, and it works ok.. not nearly as well as other HL2 mods or the original game itself, but i do get 40 - 50 FPS running at 1024x768, and using a modified config and the -heapsize and -dxlevel (81) switches.

My PC:

WinXp SP2
Athlon 2400+ (not overclocked unfortunately)
1GB Ram
Geforce 6200 (slightly overclocked)

definitely not the best rig, but it works fine if you turn down some graphical elements. For some tips, just reply in this post.

Ok I have a Pentium 4 3.4 gig dual core (early model) 1 gig ram and a Radeon 9600 sapphire card. I use the latest drivers from Radeon set everything to performance in the catylist center then set my advanced game options to what is recommended. You can also try this link steam://support/?Issues=*.

This link lets steam check your system for conflicts or problems with source based games.

I had similar FPS before trying V-Sync. Now I get 60 FPS regardless of how much is going on... unless it's just insane in which I drop to about 30. Give it a try.
