Firewalls

Hey Guys-

So, I'm fixing up my uncle's computer - I had to bloody reformat the whole damned thing because of some hardcore virus that fucked EVERYTHING up. They couldn't even access the fucking control panel / task manager - and I'm looking for a few programs I should put on there to help keep this from happening again.

So far my plans were to install AVG Free as well as SpyBot S&D on here, but I would still need a firewall.

So, do you guys have any suggestions for my predicament? Or would you suggest a different anti-virus / anti-spyware setup?

Thanks in advance.

Just use the Windows Firewall, it works fine so long as you have SP2.

The WF only filters inbound. If you're concerned about preventing this or mitigating it in the future you need something that is bi-directional. In the case of downloader trojans a bi-directional firewall will help stop it from expanding...WF will not. The key is that she needs to be clued in as to what it is that she's authorizing access out to the net. Zone Alarm is one such.

Comodo is the best, free firewall program out there.

Zone Alarm fucked up a lot of programs for me on Windows XP, though.

I make do with Windows firewall. Can't be bothered with those more secure but sluggish others. Faffing about with settings and mitherd about stuff all the time.

I had issued with ZA a while back. True Vector Monitor (an element of ZA) fucked up so I decided to change to a different firewall. Unfortunately, when I removed ZA, TVM was still there and wouldn't end/uninstall. Needless to say my system would only work with ZA until I formatted.

Now I just use Windows Firewall and happilly sit behind my hardware firewall.

There are going to be people who've had issues with ZA and others that were able to run problem free. ZA is only one of many programs out there. Find one that appears to do the job and run with it. Hawk Eye, here's something to consider. You're dealing with someone who's already infected the machine once to the point where you're having to do a reformat and rebuild. Unless something changes in the mix it will likely happen again. Relying in Windows Firewall is fine for an experienced user but I think it's foolish to do that with an inexperienced user.

Lol, I downloaded that one JohnnyMullet said before, and my Avast antivirus stopped the download and alerted me of a Virus. I can't remember what I use now to be honest, but I hate windows firewall.

The main reason I was figuring that the Windows Firewall would be fine is because they're running on a dial-up modem, and thus not online too often to actually fuck up.

But the point Innoc made is damn true. I'll burn them a copy of Comodo and see how they fare.
