Steam drops Win98/WinME support, June 2007

News courtesy of fellow player Ladron over at drippy-'s 2fort forums.

This picture is the only heads up I have found thus far... sucks for those of us still on the older OSes. Bah. ):

I think Microsoft dropped support for 98 and ME too, so about time to get a new OS.

1) It's not an official link... yet.
2) While this isn't a problem for most of us, many online cafes run CS and such under windows 98 or ME. It's more of a pain for them then most of us. Although I do feel sorry for those running steam on an older rig

So now you can't play Half-Life 1 on the OS that was released for?

Well you can certainly still install and play HL1.

And I doubt Steam will suddenly go: "Error: Your Operating System SUCKS! Click "Next" to purchase and download Windows VISTA from STEAM (now only 10% above retail price!)"

theres always using the original off-steam version

matter of fact, I think theres a group out there somewhere that have maintained a substitute to steam for online gameplay for the old HL1 games (hl1,tfc, etc.)

You mean there's a replacement for WON?

Yeah, but it beats the pants off Steam for a LAN game.

Yep, http://www.won2.net/
No Australian servers seem to be up though, only USA and Europe
I'd host one but Optus don't let me under the usage agreement

Dude, NO ISP lets you host a server. You a breaking the rules when you send someone a file over AIM. Get over it and host it, and make sure you have a firewall up. If they catch you they will just warn you, not just outright cancel your service.

Uhh my old one let me host servers, my friends one lets him host servers & the 2 ISPs he had before the one he has now let him host servers.

I don't think i'm very good for serving with my dad constantly on BitTorrent anyway though.

"You a breaking the rules when you send someone a file over AIM. "
I know my ISP sure doesn't class a file transfer as a server.

Steam dropping Win98/ME support isn't that big a deal, if you're still running a 10yr old OS you should definately upgrade. If your computer can't handle it just put Linux on it and turn it into a server.

It'll sure do, if it's still alive in 10 years from now.
