Thank you vista beta testers

Well, microcrash is talking about releasing vista service pack 1. So maybe with all the patches vista is almost ready for prime time.

To all the testers that have helped used vista since its beta release in January - Thank you.

For those of you that do not understand sarcasm - microsoft is going to release service pack 1 for vista, so maybe that will help clear up some of the bugs.

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2176780,00.asp

Quote:
Microsoft is finally talking about the much-anticipated first service pack for Windows Vista and will release the first beta to a select group of about 15,000 customer and partner testers within the next few weeks.

The Redmond, Wash., software maker will release the beta for Windows XP Service Pack 3 at the same time.

Microsoft acknowledged Aug. 29 that it has already shared beta previews of Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1 with small group of testers, a fact it refused to admit until recently despite numerous leaks on the Internet.

I'd like to take this time to point out that SP1 for Vista is only being released in 2 weeks to SELECT BETA TESTERS. This does not include the involuntary Beta Testers that paid for an operating system they expected to be complete but was not. SP1 was originally supposed to ship by the end of June.

SP3 has also been something that MS has talked about and it's supposed to be the final release of a major SP for XP. Anyone want to bet that SP3 includes changes to the anti-piracy provisions of XP?

Supposedly that will never happen. MS has said as much and, to be honest, they really want to force Vista adoption.

It will likely wrap up all of the security fixes in one package since SP2 as well as a other issues that they have not yet fixed all in one. Judgment is best reserved until the final product is known and other people have tested it.

Most of the security problems with Windows seem to be tied to Outlook (don't touch it), Internet Explorer (don't touch it), Microsoft Office (don't touch it) and Windows Media Player (don't touch it).

Honestly, a fair majority of the security patches of late have been for service vulnerabilities to XP itself. Various ports and services that have vulnerable code.

I thought MS had no plans on a SP3 for XP?

I just hope that SP3 doesn't have the problems that SP2 had on release...

No, they've had plans for that for a long time. What they don't have plans for is putting DX10 into it.

SP3 will likely include all the latest patches in one big download. If you do a fresh install of XP with SP2 and run it through windows update, there are like 50+ updates that have to be installed. A new system, with a fresh install takes 2 - 3 hours just to run through all the updates. So instead of installing all of those updates, just install SP3.

Its the same thing with windows 2000 - sp1, sp2, sp3 & sp4. And now there is the roll up patch for windows 2000, which includes all of the updates after SP4. The same thing will be for XP. You will have sp2, sp3, and at the end of life there will be a roll up patch.
