The answer is a bit wierd. The original engine was optimised for the first 800 wpolies (I think it's w...), and extra polies after that were rendered like 10 times slower. Computers were able to handle a few hundred of the slow polies eventually, so 10,000 to 12,000 became the sort-of accepted limit.
I think source is optimised better, but the limit isn't so much bigger (it is a bit...) Mostly the engine looks good because of props, displacements, shaders and so on. Kindof a bitch for us mappers :/ Fuck if I can figure out why valve made another BSP engine... (I know the reason is that they started tinkering with the HL1 engine as soon as HL was done, but that's no excuse ) |
