No... it can't, mostly because a feature like that would simply SCREAM "LET ME TAKE CREDIT FOR OTHERS WORK".
hmm I think I found a program a while through google though that will do uit. [my map had completely fried.... like really really badly]. Try there :X. |

even if it does decompile, all the brushes will be sliced to hell in ways you don't want it to and you'll have to repair it brush by brush, texture by texture.

This might be due to my ignorance of progamming code (what with the compiling and complaining and composting and all of those com- words), but if something can be compiled, can it not in theory be perfectly decompiled to its pre-compiled state?
Gah, too many "compiled"s in one sentence there, methinks.

No, not really. If that theory were true, we'd be able to perfectly decompile Windows.
Decompiling hl2 maps is fairly close to perfect but hl1 maps come out as bit of a cluster fuck. Ok for a template though. |

Can you turn a cow into grass and rain? :C
As ppl have said, it's only really useful as a template, but I've used winbsp successfully before (though I think you might have to download the old hammer/worldcraft also to open them): http://www.slackiller.com/hlprograms.htm |

you have to decompile into a .map file then open it with the "old"(3.5 or lower) hammer and save as a .rmf? file. and then you can open it with the "new"(SDK) hammer.

Never got that to work, but it works converting between vmf and .map the .maps cannot be opened in anything except worldcraft it seems though.

.maps can be openned in hammer, ive done it before, but it was 3.4
edit: but they just lose their texture ratios and cut the brushes in weird ways |
