1.5 Billion Dollar Judgement Against Microsoft over MP3 dispute

Holy Pocket Change Batman

Wow, I wasn't even aware there was a dispute in the works on this. Seems a bit ironic that they're "working so hard" to implement DRM in Vista and get slapped with a huge penalty over infringing on someone else properties rights....wow...

That's just a drop i the bucket compared the MS's corporate income, especially with the release of Vista.

I really don't think that Lucent will go after other companies, they are already milking the big one.

Perhaps not. A few years ago it was Novell threatening to sue the Linux world at large over the allegations that their IP's were infringed upon with certain lines of code being incorporated into the kernel....holy crap...can you imagine being a judge in that case? Or, worse, on the jury?

Maybe if you change 2/3, which doesn't look like much, to 700,000,000, which is more than twice the U.S. population, then it is not even close to over 2 billion.

The exact price is $1.520.000.000,00
Or so I've heard.
Well, that's still a hell lot of money. No matter what company we're talking about.

It sucks that MP3 isn't an open format like OGG. Oh well, bad luck for Microsoft. Hope that Microsoft wins this one.

Microsoft actually has some history with taking things they're not entitled to and trying to do an end run around the owner. One thing is certain and that this issue will be in the courts for years to come.

Man, can you imagine being on that jury? That had to be some dry material to go over...

Somehow, if MS does pay it out, chances are their accountants will have it posted as a business expense. Thus, no real effect on them at all.

That's totally crazy, I didn't know that there was a patent dispute on mp3's.

I guess apple's "mp4" technology saved them some serious negative attention.

Nearly any good and new idea is going to be driven by someone's patent. I do not think that Apple is out of the woods as I believe that mp3 is a derivative format of mp3.

i personally hate apple. i hate that if you own an ipod it is a pain in the ass to use and you have to use iTunes. i hate that if you buy stuff off iTunes you have to burn it to a cd then rip it if you want to play it in winamp. why can't you just drag and drop mp3s to your mp3 player and play them? does the zune work this way? or do you have to have windows media player? if i am not mistaken, apples ipod is the only mp3 player that requires certain software in order to load songs onto the thing.

also, why does apple have to bash pc? pc does not bash apple. those mac commercials make me hot and bothered...

This is pretty messed up because Microsoft, (and many other major companies) have licensced the mp3 tech from Fraunhofer..who apparently co developed it with lucent. There's something wrong when you fork over ~16 million for a license to use the tech and then get sued for infringing on a patent. If Fraunhofer is selling illegitimate licenses shouldn't they be the one that's sued?

Also heard some crap about Lucent back dating one of their patents through some loophole so that it pre-dated a joint patent w/ Fraunhofer...can't verify that though.
