A 43-year-old man from Maryland has sold the domain name pizza.com for almost 10,000 times the price he paid for it. Chris Clark registered the name pizza.com in 1994 for just $20, and continued to pay the annual registration fee until January of this year, when he heard the domain name vodka.com had gone for a massive $3 million, and decided he wanted a slice of the pie.

Me and my friend wanted to do this with a bunch of domains when we first heard of the internet. Unfortunately neither of us could figure out how to buy domains without a credit card. We would be millionaires by now!

Not really cybersquatting. First of all this is 1994, not 2004. Second, it's not like it's pizzahut.com. It's pizza.com, which is generic.

Which makes you wonder why anyone would pay milllions for such a generic name. Do they think people just take the name of what they want, put .com on the end and type it in their browser?

Hell, they probably do. People are dumb.

I say it's still squatting if you don't have a site there. If you register someone's brand name I'd call that trademark infringement.

I ran across a cybersquatter years ago that tried to "sell" me a domain name for a business name we'd been operating under for years. I discovered that it had been already registered when I decided to pursue the domain name. Initially they'd tried to BS and stymie but ultimately transferred the domain to me when it was clear that they hadn't a leg to stand on. That was an actual trade/business name so it was clear.

Honestly, I can't see where cybersquatting would apply to a generic term like pizza. That guy just got lucky.
